Functional Pottery; Form and Aesthetic in Pots of Purpose

I found Functional Pottery to be a pleasant surprise for the most part, although I was mildly disappointed by the more practical sections of the book. Roughly the first half of the book provides an interesting historical and cultural review of functional pottery, which went beyond what I had anticipated from the title and general description. A portion of the second half of the book focused on the mechanics of particular forms of functional pottery. This portion, which was my particular interest in buying the book, was a little less thorough and extensive than I had hoped. For the beginner/intermediate potter specifically interested in practical advice and detail regarding the mechanics of functional pottery forms, the material in the book, while useful, may not go far enough. I recommend this book as a general overview, keeping in mind that the scope of the book covers a broader range of topics than implied by its title, and that only sixty pages of the book are dedicated to the practical considerations and mechanics of designing and creating functional pottery.

A must-read for anyone who works with clients

While this book is targeted toward coaches, anyone who serves clients will *greatly* benefit from reading this book.

Litvin and Chandler will challenge your fears and excuses ("They can't afford it." "I'm not worth that much." "I don't know how to set fees." "I don't know who to talk to." "I don't have a website.") and show you what to do instead.

And, in chapters 13 and 14, you'll learn 18 disciplines to build a healthy client roster. These two chapters alone are worth purchasing the book. My favorites are #1: Sell the experience, not the concept. and #15: Leave the conversation in the context of possibility, not the context of affordability. The concepts seem simple, but will require some practice to really integrate them into your process.

The chapters are short and written in an easy, conversational tone. I know I'll be referring back to this book often!

Excellent book, contradicts itself sometimes, but the point gets made.

This is an excellent book for any coach to read. His method of "creating clients" is how just about any high-earning consultant got to where they are. They recognized that what they have, holds value, and then got really good at selecting only those who were worthy of receiving that value. At it's core, it's scarcity marketing. Sometimes a product or service perceived value is directly related to the price paid.

The good:
-Inspirational. If you're struggling to get clients, this is a great book to read.
-He shares his method of creating high earnings, with high impact clients. I also like that he says it is his path, and what worked for him might not be the right way for you. He gives you permission to find what works for you, but also shares what has worked for him.
-He drills into you that you can't be needy as a coach. He doesn't spell it out, but being needy de-values your coaching. Be selective, turn down clients that aren't a good fit, and make sure your potential clients are invested. If they aren't, challenge them.
- Within the book you can decipher his method of creating clients, however I don't know if even Rich understands the methodology behind why this works. He creates scarcity and has a high rate, which raises his perceived value.

The bad:
He has some hyperbole in there about how you should not market, not e-mail, don't go to networking events, don't cold call people. After stating this advice, 2 pages later he tells you to call someone right now. He calls it "having a conversation." Semantics my friend. He also has some examples of e-mailing people, which he also says not to do multiple times, but I think does a fair job of showing how e-mail should be used to add value to the client, and/or get them on the phone. Nothing else. He never states this explicitly thought. He is very good at explaining what has worked for him, but it would have been nice if he explained the selling/marketing/psychological techniques behind why this works.

Overall I would recommend it. It was very inspiring, and I believe will help me differentiate myself as a coach.

The Practice Development "Bible" for Coaches and Consultants

People pay Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin tens of thousands of dollars to be taught and coached on the concepts in this book.

It blasts away the idea that coaches need to be out "selling" their services through mass marketing and sales calls, and shows them how to boldly enroll all the clients they want at fees they deserve, by showing up as the professionals they are and offering to serve people.

Don't try to sell the 'concept' of coaching... Don't cold call... Fill your week with conversations that lead to coaching clients... Let them experience what you can do for them...

As a client and student of both authors, I was blown away at how much they give away in this book. It's EVERYTHING they've taught me--and then some. They don't hold back. And what I've learned from them has resulted in my being able to relax and make a great living as a coach.

One more thing--many of my clients are advisors, attorneys and consultants, and the ideas in this book have helped them grow their practices, too.

Buy this book, do what they say, and you'll have the kind of coaching or consulting practice you thought was just a dream.

Young Cupcake learned to survive by turning tricks, downing hard liquor, partying like a rock star, and ingesting every drug she could find while hitchhiking up and down the California coast. She stumbled into gangbanging, drug dealing, hustling, prostitution, theft, and, eventually, the best scam of all: a series of 9-to-5 jobs. But Cupcake’s unlikely tour through the cubicle world was paralleled by a quickening descent into the nightmare of crack cocaine use, till she eventually found herself living behind a Dumpster.

When it came time for me to talk, I wasn’t sure which parts of my past to tell, which to keep secret, and which to pretend never happened. Uncle Jr. had already seen the welts on my back, so he wasn’t too surprised when I told them about some of the physical abuse I endured at Diane’s. Everyone else hit the roof, except Daddy. He got really quiet and started balling and unballing his fists.

I continued my update. Experience had taught me that adults have trouble accepting the idea of children having sex. I decided that from then on, that part of my life never happened. I picked up the story by telling them about Fly, the Gangstas, and getting shot.

I was dying for a cigarette. So it seemed a good time to announce that I smoked cigarettes—and weed.

He didn’t know how right he was. But for me, it was too late to be worrying about stronger drugs—the only worrying I did was whether I could find a connection to get some. So I just smiled, nodded, and took another hit off my cigarette.

Brown conveys this all in gritty detail, and her struggle to come clean and develop her potential—she's now an attorney with a leading California firm and a motivational speaker—ends her story on a high note. Unable to take the mistreatment, Cupcake drifted into a life of prostitution, drug addiction, gang affiliation, stealing, homelessness, and any available means of survival. Very Inspiring

It took me a while to get into this book because of the terrible things that Cupcake experienced and the choices she made but it is a very inspiring book that no matter what you have been through, how little you have, you can turn it around if you are determined and put the hard work in. Cup was able to accomplish so much near the end - I kind of wish more emphasis was put onto the amazing things near the end - after struggling to get to where she turns it around I didn't want the book to end because I wanted to hear more of the great things she has done. I have seen too many lives affected by drugs and this gives me hope that more people in situations like this can and do turn it around to become successful and have a rewarding life. My cousin battled with drugs and addiction from a young age and then when approaching 40 he got clean and went back to school. He just graduated at the top of his class and was hired with what I believe is one of his first jobs EVER and is doing fabulous. I am so proud that he made the decision and is doing so well now. He sees what it's like to live life to the fullest and is happier than ever. This book gives you a "good feeling" and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a motivational/inspirational story.

Great job Cupcake Brown!! Thank you for sharing your story and I am so glad you were able to overcome all of the unfortunate situations you had to deal with through your life! I hope people dealing with an addiction can see that there is life without drugs and that they really can succeed if they have the determination.

Inspiring, heart breaking, and honest

**SPOILER?? I couldn't write my review without touching on some plot points, but it shouldn't be anything so revealing to ruin the book.

I started reading A Peice of Cake shortly after losing my mom. I was young and it was unexpected, so I was deeply lost. Cupcake's story made me feel emotions in ways that few books can, at a time that I needed to feel more than anything else. The feelings she described surrounding the death of her mother left me sobbing, but grateful to know my own feelings weren't abnormal. There were other things in her book that I (unfortunately) related to as well, and again I would feel better reading her story and feeling less alone in my own thoughts. The way that she described events with such blatant honesty, the magnitude of Cupcake's experiences, the long path of her soberity— its inspiring and moving. Sometimes I would read and just cry. Sometimes they were tears of happiness, sometimes sadness or anger. But above all, her story translated out of the book into my head creating genuine emotions. Few books have done this for me. This is a book that will stick with me for a lifetime.

A Gripping Memoir

This is a very sad, and mostly depressing memoir. The horrors that "Cup" endured were painful to read. The book is a little long and not very well written. But I guess the quality of the writing is not the point of this book. Having read a lot of books written by substance abusers I found the last third of the book a bit "been there/read that." However, her story is very inspirational and has its uplifting moments. To have gone through what she went through and come out the other side - doing what she's doing now - is truly miraculous. Keep some kleenex nearby.

Better than Oxford (Pinyin users only)

Having studied Chinese for 5 years using the same Oxford dictionary, I thought I could find no better resource in my studies. However, I stumbled upon this dictionary at my university library and have fallen in love. It provides the pinyin accessibility as well as a good radical index for those characters you can't pronounce. It also provides a nice selection of variants with each character - and it's a paperback!
My only complaints are the price (a bit high) and the tiny print. However, I've yet to see a decent Chinese-English dictionary without tiny print.

Larger Print!

The Pinyin Chinese-English Dictionary is by far the easiest to use. The problem with the paperback version is the small and in-distinct print. I wondered if the hardback would have larger print. It does. The print is about twice the size of the paperback. For me it has made all the difference and was well worth the price. The printing is still not the best, but it's far easier to make out than the paperback version. This combined with a 4X dome magnifier and I'm good to go!

There's nothing like forbidden love...

It seems that many of us tend to grab for what we're not supposed to have. I know that I have done this all of my life. If you tell me that I can't have something, it makes me want it with a passion. Shakespeare played off of this theme quite well with "Romeo and Juliet", as does author Kennedy Claire in "My Best Friend's Brother".

The amazingly suspenseful story of Scarlett and Dev, two (older) teens who fall passionately for each other yet come up against some pretty formidable obstacles. Scarlett is from the wrong side of the tracks and is fortunate in having a best friend with a generous family who takes her into their home for her senior year of high school. The Bashir family is not only wealthy, but quite traditional, so when it becomes known that their older son, Dev, has fallen for Scarlett, life gets complicated for all involved. There are some other mitigating factors involved in the story, that I won't name as spoilers, that kept this very interesting.

I loved this book from start to finish. In fact, I read the entire thing in one sitting which is quite unusual for me. Forbidden love is a great theme for any story and Claire pulls this off very well with the traditional family dynamic adding a great element to the story. As a reader, you want so badly for these two to make things work against the odds and I closed the final page feeling very satisfied with a solid read.

A Delightful Read

This is a lovely and sweet romantic book. It made my heart smile and I enjoyed it so much. The unexpected events, the forbidden passion held by two very different people. Scarlett is a delightful character, strong and yet wanting to be loved and adored. Dev, her best friend's brother who tormented her and made her feel less than human, all the while hiding his real feelings. It is a diverse group of characters, but they matched the story perfectly. The details are clear and I was pulled into the lives of all of them. I could not stop reading it until it ended, and I wanted more. I am a hopeless romantic and this is one of the best books I have read. I can not wait to read the next book of this series. The author, Kennedy Claire did a superb job and the passion and love of life and writing shine through and I look forward to reading more of her work. I definitely recommend this book to all who love romance and the search of true love.

A Good Read, But Needs Development

3.5 Stars. Overall, I enjoyed this story. I appreciated the shorter length. Short stories are very under appreciated. I felt the author's use of first person was well done. I also felt the ethnicity of the story was handled nicely.

But ... I could not decide if I liked the characters. I liked Scarlett most of the time, but as the story progressed, she became frustrating. I wanted her to ask more questions, speak up, and not cower all the time. Dev was fascinating. I liked his hard edges, the sultriness of him. I liked the author's use of his journal entries to include his POV. That was well done.

The formatting of the book had flaws. There were numerous simple editing errors, wrong choice or tense of word, spelling mistakes, and missing words that a good editor could have found. I also was very peeved with the extra material from book 2 in the back. This is a sales technique I personally don't care for.

The storyline itself had ups and downs for me. Though the pace of it moved along nicely and kept my interest, it was more erotic than I feel is appropriate for young adults. I do not know if it is being marketed as such, but I would say it isn't appropriate for anyone under eighteen. Setting aside my own morals on teens and sex, less needed to be said of the details of their encounter. Sex should NEVER be the core point of the story. I do not feel it was entirely the issue in this tale, but it was made much more of than I think was needed to make the author's point.

Lastly, the ending came up too quickly. This is not a reference to length, but to scenes. More time should have been given to her recovery from her dad's death and the troubled relationship between she and Dev. The marriage proposal, though I understand it's placement and figure the author deliberately kept the story short in order to write book two, seemed hastily written and, if given more time to develop before lopping the end off, the story would have been much better.

I will not read book 2 as the preview told me enough that it isn't warranted. I am not totally turned off by this book or this author, but cannot recommend it because of sexual content.
