Our fights against Iraq in 1991 and in the post-9/11 years have seen further wars that demanded that unique combination of courage, tenacity, professionalism, and versatility that makes a Marine no better friend, and no worse enemy. The book is written at a lively place, with plenty of first-hand accounts by marines that pull no punches in highlighting the brutal nature of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is well illustrated with maps and 16 pages of black-and-white photographs. It's certainly a compelling read and highly recommended to those with an interest in modern-day conflicts. Another excellent book in the history of Marine Corps Tanks.The author, Ed Gilbert,refers to it as the last volume in his series.Hang around another 5-10 yrs.,Mr.Gilbert ;,with the world situation volume 5 or 6 may be needed before to long.

Recommended for all gliders

A romanian book on this topic does not exist (yet?), so after I took a paragliding course I searched for an english one. This particular book captured my attention and I've purchased it. It was exactly what I expected, a very well written guide to everything that paragliding means.

A "Must" Read....

I have added Judge Buergenthal to my list of most desired dinner partners and in fact, he is at the top of the list.

His book is mesmerizing and relates how he was torn from his family during the Holocaust, thrown into the concentration camps, yet he triumphed over all the atrocities and managed to survive and later became reunited with his mother, who also survived another concentration camp.

He is an amazing man and after his studies, devoted his adult life to international and human rights law and went on to become a Judge on the International Court of Justice in The Hague, a position he held until 2010.

As I have read and studied the Holocaust in great detail throughout my life... the first thought that came to my mind... before I even opened the cover of this book was... why would someone wait over sixty-years to write of his experiences? And then on the absolute first page... in the very first sentences... was my answer... stated eloquently... and sparsely... yet with great strength. And this was a harbinger of the powerful yet "delicate" style that this entire masterpiece would be presented in. The forward written my NOBEL PEACE PRICE WINNER and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel states: "ARE THERE RULES TO HELP A SURVIVOR DECIDE THE BEST TIME TO BEAR WITNESS TO HISTORY? WHICH IS BETTER: TO DARE TO LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE BLINDING PRESENT, NO MATTER HOW PAINFUL, OR TO AWAIT THE DETACHMENT OF HINDSIGHT-WHICH, BEING LESS PAINFUL, IS MORE OBJECTIVE?"

Before detailing the entire horrific journey of a boy who when he wasn't even six-years-old yet... was forced with his family from their home into a Jewish ghetto in Poland and saw all his childhood friends massacred by the Nazi's... before he even arrived at the reincarnation of hell itself... the actual concentration camps. By the time this young Jewish German child was ten-years-old he found himself in the infamous Auschwitz... one of the Nazi concentration camps. He was separated from his parents... his Father was murdered and his Mother he didn't see again... until a miraculous reunion years after the war. The question is how did this child survive? A combination of "luck"... protective parents in the beginning... and the guile of an abandoned animal with no alternative but to grow up quicker than nature had ever intended. But let's jump ahead to the present... and the knowledge of what type of man this "LUCKY-CHILD" became... and it is this knowledge that adds such an additional unrelenting luster to this incredible story.

Thomas Buergenthal received law degrees from NYU and Harvard Law School and is currently the American judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. This former child Holocaust survivor... who actually spent years in a living hell... has risen from the literal ashes of the worst atrocities known to mankind... and become a shining beacon of light for all humanity to see.

The author's writing uses a restraint that is almost hard to believe... yet he still pulls no punches. At his weakest times during his ordeal... when other prisoners collapsed... and laid down and died... or were mowed down with heartless Nazi bullets... he refused to quit and stated: "IF I GIVE UP, THEY WILL HAVE WON, I KEPT MUTTERING TO MYSELF. STAYING ALIVE HAD BECOME A GAME I PLAYED AGAINST HITLER, THE SS, AND THE NAZI KILLING MACHINE." The reader must remember that this story is being written sixty-years after the fact... and must acknowledge the lofty judicial position the author has attained... and so one time the reader is surprised... and speaking for myself... I don't how he controlled even his internal emotions... then or now... when after the war and his liberation... a long and complicated road led him back to Germany in December 1946 at the age of twelve-and-a-half-years old... and he was living in the midst of town folk who most assuredly had been part of the Nazi war machine. "... ON SUNDAYS, WHEN ENTIRE GERMAN FAMILIES WOULD PASS OUR HOUSE ON THEIR WAY TO AND FROM THEIR WALKS. I WOULD OBSERVE THEM FROM OUR BALCONY WITH ENVY AND HATRED. HERE WERE FATHERS AND MOTHERS, GRANDFATHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS, WALKING WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN - PEOPLE WHO, FOR ALL I KNEW, HAD KILLED MY FATHER AND GRANDPARENTS! AS I CONTEMPLATED THESE SCENES OF HAPPY GERMANS ENJOYING THEIR LIVES AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED IN THE RECENT PAST, I LONGED TO HAVE A MACHINE GUN MOUNTED ON THE BALCONY SO I COULD DO TO THEM WHAT THEY HAD DONE TO MY FAMILY. IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO GET OVER THESE SENTIMENTS AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT SUCH INDISCRIMINATE ACTS OF VENGEANCE WOULD NOT BRING MY FATHER OR GRANDPARENTS BACK TO LIFE. IT TOOK ME MUCH LONGER TO REALIZE THAT ONE CANNOT HOPE TO PROTECT MANKIND FROM CRIMES SUCH AS THOSE THAT WERE VISITED UPON US UNLESS ONE STRUGGLES TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF HATRED AND VIOLENCE THAT INVARIABLY LEADS TO EVER MORE SUFFERING BY INNOCENT HUMAN BEINGS."

I rarely read this type of book.....

But once I picked it up I found I couldn't put it down. The story of how a 10 year old beat the odds and became the man he did managed to grab my attention and hold it until the end of the book. What he did to survive, the mind and soul that kept him going even at the darkest hour.

These horrible things made his a man who has work hard and made today's world better.

The book is written with honesty, so there is death and horrible things talked about. However, it is written in a way that is understated and in ways that would allow for younger readers to comprehend but bot be overcome by the violence.

Benoît Gomis is an international security analyst focusing on terrorism and organized crime. A Look at Life After Death with a Wink and a Nod

Ms. Roach has been successful in making the serious, fundamental issues of existence and the scientific possibility of an afterlife both entertaining and insightful. I have only read one other book she has authored, Stiff (about the incredible ways in which the human body or parts thereof are used for research and other endeavors after death) and found it to be similarly enjoyable. Roach is adept at keeping her readers engaged by reporting on her research in a up-beat yet journalistic manner, interspersing her reporting frequently with her wry humor. If you have ever wondered about ghosts, near-death experiences, psychics and mediums, ectoplasm, or other "evidence" of the afterlife, Roach provides an objective look at each of these topics and does not disappoint. I would recommend this book for anyone who has ever had questions about life after death (in other words, everyone).

Good Book to Read about Police Stuff, not Necessarily for Writers.

Not as good as I hoped. A lot of information surrounding the real (or needed) stuff like how police work a situation. The author writes about what law enforcement do instead of how they do it or the 'how to" is wrapped with too much other stuff. For instance, one paragraph (and one page) starts, "Swat training is intense and extremely demanding. Standards for Swat teams nationwide were established in 1983..." It is only at the bottom of the page that Lofland begins to get to the logistics of how a Swat team acts--"A Swat high-risk entry team normally consists of six to ten officers..." The fact that Swat training is intense and demanding is something we all know, standards being established in 1983 is something we do not need to know. If you have the time and just want to read a book on police stuff, this is a good book; if you want a book to help you write police procedurals, this might not be what you're looking for.

Slightly out of date but an accurate and useful reference

This book is a must have for writers who need to cover police procedures in their stories but have only experienced these procedures through the eyes of Hollywood. Author Lee Loffland does an excellent job of both presenting the procedure, explaining the hows and whys of it, but also presenting methods to incorporate these procedures in your writing. Loffland takes very mundane and technical processes and places them before the layman in an understandable, and useable, format.

The only issue with this book is that, since technology has changed police procedures dramatically in the past few years, the techniques may be somewhat dated. The principles are still there, but the actual physical process may have changed. Digital fingerprint technology is an example, replacing almost all standard printing techniques. But these shortcomings are not a detriment to the book, just an area where an author may need to do some follow-up research. Which they should be doing anyway.

If you write in crime, mystery, thrillers or even many romance and drama genres, this is a reference work that should be on your bookshelf. Or electronic reader. Technology hasn't just changed police procedures...

A Sure-fire Winner

The subtitle for this book indicates that it was written primarily for the writers of crime books and crime-related short stories. But that is a much-too-narrow focus. This book is for anyone who is interested in police work, criminal investigations, and all of the aspects that fit under those two general categories. And it delves into these areas to a much greater depth than the ever-popular and ever-growing list of television programs that claim to be "reality-based" crime shows.

Nearly everybody is now familiar with terms such as crime scene investigation, autopsy, the exclusionary rule, blood spatter analysis, flash-bangs, DNA evidence, and the Miranda warning. But if you want to know what kind of equipment crime scene investigators need, what kind of training goes on in police academies, how long rigor mortis effects a corpse, what a "sally port" is, what kind of chemicals are used to make meth, or the difference between ASPs and shock sticks, this is the book for you.

Author Lee Lofland is well known to writers of crime novels mainly because of his expertise in the field, but also because of his clear, concise, and jargon-free writing style. He is a writer's writer, but he is also a reader's writer. His prose is clean and direct, his organization logical, and his coverage comprehensive.

I highly recommend this book for anyone--writer or non-writer--who wants to know what REALLY goes on during a criminal investigation, inside a courtroom, or behind prison walls.

The Great Gypsy Witch Cards

I love these cards. I received my first deck when I was seven, and had no problem with them, so they can certainly be used by beginners. They do have some dark cards, but that is a part of life. They are very accurate and enjoyable to use.

A reviewer mentioned that they were first published in 1903, true, then the reviewer said no tarot deck could claim that. There are tarot decks that are reproductions of decks made in the 15th century such as the Visconti Sforza, and then there are decks like the ever popular Rider Waite (first published in 1909) and Cagliostro Tarot (first published in 1912) so these decks definitely have been around too!

GYPSY WITCH .. PLAYING CARDS?

I have to say that these cards may be just for fun, to some people, but these cards are not a game. I've had done readings on myself and others, they've turned out to be at least 90% accurate, both good and bad. I highly recommend these cards to people who don't like to beat around he bush and to those who want a straight answer. I don't recommened this product to the delicate because there is a dark side to the deck.

I love GYPSY WITCH cards and I will continue to use them!

These cards are wicked awesome!

:) I used these cards years ago. Sold them and bought a new pack the other day. (Wished I had never sold them to begin w/, but they were getting old.) Anyway already I am getting interesting results. I find them simple for beginners tho. The layouts are easy as long as the instructions are read throughly. The instructions are much more simple for me than the Rider-Waite deck, plus the explanations are not so scattered. I love my pack and would not give them away for anything. I like the fact that you can get a yes/no resp, something you cannot get w/ the Rider Waite deck (unless there are layouts out there I have not heard of). This deck allows simple quick explanations and not 5 or 6 outcomes that do not make sense or 5 or 6 events that do not even apply to the situation. This deck is really simple and any beginner should be able to pick it up quickly. If I can, anyone can. I highly recommend them. And it takes not time at all to pick up on the images and meanings.

Good For What It's About

As a long time listener to the Lionel radio show, I was anxious to read this book. (Everyone's Crazy Except You and Me and I'm Not so Sure About You)

Lionel had been a highly skilled lawyer before becoming a talk show host, so I thought his book would be about some of his court cases. He occasionally relates them over the air, and his descriptive, true experiences as an attorney are either hilarious or about thought provoking legal paradoxes, both of which are enjoyable or fascinating to hear.

His book is well written and his knowledge of Latin along with remotely used English language phraseology is a learning experience in itself. However, every chapter is a rant about various subjects that get him riled up. He seems furious with everything he dislikes, whether big or small--from Neo-Cons; down to people with grotesque feet wearing flip-flops. There's a good laugh in every chapter, especially if one enjoys jokes poking fun at hypocracy.

This book is more likely to appeal to males than to females due to the use of rather ribald language which, as a woman, I don't particularly appreciate. In fact, I would have given it a higher score had he cleaned it up a bit.

If you're a guy and that's the way you talk when your having a beer with your buds, you'll get a big kick out reading this book--oh, and you'd best be of the Liberal persuasion.

Lionel IS crazy!

I've been a Lionel fan for many, many years!
This book is a great read, makes a perfect gift for grad or dad.
Should be required reading... well, perhaps not, but, it's a fun book!
Be warned, Lionel is a self-described etymologist, a philologist, and a logophile; you might want to have a dictionary close by as you read the book.

I had never heard of Lionel or his talk show. My husband purchased this book on kindle. It is a very witty book. His topics are clever. I don't know if "conservatives" will like it, but this fake liberal did.

Beautiful illustrations and designs but with a problematic issue

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.

First of all, the illustrations are beautiful. I say illustrations rather than designs because a number of them appear to be finished ink and pen studies rather than designs that a colorist can finish and interpret in their own unique way. For those designs, I can't envision how I would color them (possibly with watercolors) but I certainly will try as I'm up for a challenge. Because of this, I detracted a star from my rating.

There are still many designs which I feel that I can, as a moderately experienced colorist and artist, be able to color and enjoy. For those, there are intricate details and I may need to use my magnifying lamp to work on those areas.

Physically, the book is very well made. The designs are printed on one side with excerpts from the books written on the back of the page. The pages are thick and white; however, they are not perforated. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so removing pages from the book will be a little more difficult. Most of the designs merge into the binding, but the portions that might be lost if I cut the pages out are not the central theme of the design.

None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. My water-based markers did not leak through; however, my ultra-fine Sharpies and Copics did. In any case, I would recommend putting a waste sheet of some sort (chipboard, freezer paper, cardstock, etc.) under the page you are working on to keep ink from possibly getting on the following pages.

In summary, an interesting coloring book with some very colorist unfriendly but beautiful illustrations. The book is very well made but could be improved upon if the pages were perforated for easy removal.

So I like a few things about this book

So I like a few things about this book, but only a few. I LOVE the Cersi picture and the Sansa Stark one, as well so some of the more intricate pieces, but I'm irked by the 'quality' of some of the images. Coloring Book brings to the mind of sharp crisp and bold black line, but there are some pictures that feel more like sketches and are unfinished in some fashion. This is counted by the good intricate and complex images. I was really wanting to see more characters, but we only get Cersi, Sansa, Loras, Melisandra, Vareys, Daario, and even Khal Drogo... no BIG players everyone would love to color. No Tryion, Jaime, any of the other Starks, Cersi's spawn, Danerys... etc.

TL;DR: Some great images for coloring, the rest feels... poopy. Honestly I'd rather scour the internet for free linearts from artists for the series. Check the book out in stores and see if its for you... but I can't honestly recommend buying this book.
