REPLACES WINERY TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONS

If you have been seeking a copy of WINERY TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONS this is actually the new edition with a title change. When a book has been out for 20 years and has become a standard manual for wine lab people, winemakers in both big and small wineries and is a standard textbook all over the world for Enology classes, it is puzzeling as to why the author would change the Title??
Well the good news is that this greatly updated and revised edition is the best ever. But I do miss that flexible red leatherette cover. It just seemed like it belonged in the winery or on the lab bench.

The book is very detailed, in fact there is a ton of information in a small space. So much so that a person that is not great with chemistry will find themselves confused a lot of the time. I recommend taking a chemistry class before buying this book.

A concise description of wine technology

This book is short but describes all the steps it takes to make wine. It is a great introduction to the subject. I especially liked the chapter on how different inputs of the wine maker can affect the final product.

Classic of political science that is still relevant today

Dahl's work, which has been cited by countless political scientists since it was first published, provides a useful framework for the examination of democracy (which is not quite equivalent to what he terms 'polyarchy'; democracy consists of a bit more than a polyarchal system). The book is particularly concerned with the two main variables of political orders: 'competition' (public contestation among various political actors) and 'participation' (defined with regards to the right to participate). Using these variables, these systems can graded based on whether they possess these qualities to a greater or lesser degree. While most modern political systems fall in a 'gray area' (they are neither perfectly competitive nor inclusive), Dahl believes that all should strive towards the ideal type, or polyarchy. Dahl goes on to outline the benefits of a polyarchal system and the various ways in which such a system can be achieved. Yet, Dahl also recognizes that the transition to polyarchy is neither inevitable nor invariably desirable. Certain conditions are needed in order for the full benefits of a polyarchy to be realized. Thus, the minimal nature of Dahl's conception allows flexibility in its application. This is why his notion of democracy, as defined through polyarchy, has been adopted time again by those engaging in the debate over democracy, including such luminaries as Samuel P. Huntington and Larry Diamond.

4 1/2* Excellent Ref. Book for the Musically Inclined

Yes, the man is opinionated, and one may argue with some of his more controversial and unsparing critiques. His analyses are grounded in a thorough understanding of music, and he does not retreat from criticizing the most popular. I think that the whole topic is perhaps more subjective than Wilder lets on, but at least he's forthright about his opinions, and provides hundreds of musical annotations to illustrate his views. I'll also agree with the reviewer who criticizes Wilder's view that post-50's popular music was written by "amateurs." Still, this is widely regarded as a must-have for the student of popular music, and it's an excellent, albeit somewhat technical critique of popular music's "golden age." Recommended!

FIVE STARS FOR PAPERBACK - KINDLE: um...

The Kindle Edition makes the book half as useful by failing to present sheet music excerpts clearly. They are the very subject of the book, and they cannot be read.

I have treasured this volume over all others on the subject, but I wanted it on Kindle so I wouldn't tear my third copy to pieces as I did the first two. I can't really use it in Kindle edition, although the lilt of Wilder's prose certainly seems to survive the transition.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC

ALEC WILDER himself a composer has written what is generally considered the bible of AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC.More than thirty years have gone by since the first édition of this book and it remains fresh.Like many i am proud to say that this book was really for me what i needed to start digging into the history of many songs before the rock era.From BERLIN and KERN to the often forgotten greats like DONALDSON and McHUGH they are all there and mister WILDER knows what he is talking about;he had talked to many writers and composers who were at the time of the first édition still with us.Personal opinions are of course a matter of taste;we are for example not obliged to believe everything he says.Most of the time mister WILDER is right:EXAMPLE:he believes that RICHARD RODGERS was perhaps the most gifted composer of his time.Few can really disagree with that.In fact,there is only one major problem with this book,if you don't read music it won't be too enjoyable for you,because there are many examples with sheet music to proves the points he wants to make.Everyone who has an interest in the history of AMERICAN popular music should buy that book.

A practical approach to ease yourself of the baggages of other people

I am at the point of having a better understanding of what the author speaks because I have been journeying for a while in the field of psychology and self improvements as well as quite a bit of experience interacting with people.

I am a work in progress and I have no intention of rushing through it at this point though I am praying to fill a bit of fresh air fill my lungs this life thus far has been quite a journey filled with lots of pains and also OPP (Other people pains).

This is very good writing.

A few things that need to be addressed. There are problems that we cannot solve easily though it would be ideal they are more complex and take to resolve at times the only way is through distancing yourself. To become aware of a problem at times take time even with emotional cues it is not always easy to articulate what it is that is disturbing us. I have a lot of those experiences where I cannot quite put my finger on what is disturbing me even despite taking time out for reflection.

I have been called names when I detach it was a process I was doing since I was a child because I grew up in an abusive traumatic unhealthy enviornment my sense of detachment did not always protect me.

When someone has a problem saying is that so is not helpful. I really like Tolle also yet it is not the most effective I have found so one shoe does not fit all. It is a way to repress the person frankly if the issue is big I would rather refer them to a psychologist not downplay them with is that so?

Nothing is black and white. Yet this book is filled with formulas that I do intend to use to ease my life through this journey called life. I thank the author because I was using a lot of those methods unconsciously now I can be more conscious in their use but depending on where you are in life do not repress yourself please you will not be healing that way and it never works do express yourself simply in healhty and assertive ways. I never agree with any experts not even Tolle if they advocate any form of repression and oppression and invalidation.

One thing is clear though we cannot do it for others since our lives is our primary focus. Each must take responsibility for him or herself.

Not for me.

I tried this with my audible trial. It seemed interesting to me, but I am not a religious person. Within 20 mins, I had to turn it off. It started talking about giving yourself (aka fate) up to god at a rate I found unsustainable for myself.

I'm educated enough that I could substitute 'god' and 'praying' for something else because I understand the point, but the overuse is really a turn off. I would like to improve myself instead of being sold a crutch.

A Slower and More Complex Empathy

This essay is a mash-up of social psychology, psychoanalysis, pop-culture, internet subculture, philosophy, personal storytelling, and poetry. So I'm not sure how much it will appeal to people outside those who subscribe to N+1 and the Paris review. But if you are stumbling on this book because you are interested in the subject, I want to urge you to read it and surrender to its unconventional form.

I did, and it blew my mind. It is mysterious and wise, and it gives the reader "dazzling opportunities for a slower and more complex empathy."

The Age of Diagnosing Others

In a world where terms such as "narcissist" are bandied about by every man and woman on the street, this essay brings a needed dose of reality, both as to the difficulty (and rarity) of an accurate DSM V diagnosis and to the thin and contradictory ice upon which the entire constellation of "scientific" subsets is based. It is also a vivid reminder of the industries that grow up around the pop psychology of the day and a window into what we gain for ourselves when we blithely label others in such a manner. Dumbek lays out this cautionary tale by examining the theories, research, and behaviors that gave rise to the category of disorder, without glibly discarding them. My only criticism is that either Dombek or the proofreading of the kindle version was lax in attribution of some of the content. Was this Dombek's opinion? Was it a quote that was printed without quotation marks? Did I just miss a paragraph? A few more transitional sentences would have added clarity. Am I, perhaps, so smart and sensitive that I understood it anyway and anyone who doesn't is a whining narcissists?

Incomprehensible Flow

This book presents a horrible introduction to graduate level fluid mechanics. Some faculties like to teach from this book because of a few well-written sections near the end of an otherwise disastrous attempt on the subject. Kundu or Currie present a much more comprehensive approach to introducing the wonderful subject of fluids and the different solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

best GRADUATE level fluid mechanics book

This book is an excellent GRADUATE level text book on fluid mechanics. But to benefit from the book, you will first need to have good if not excellent understanding of undergraduate level material. On top of that, you will need to know index notation and perhaps some tesor knowledge from another class. The book only gives a brief review on this. If you are not familar with index notation or 2nd order tensor, the book by Aris is pretty decent. Some other good books are by Currie, White, Bird. But these books are not really good GRADUATE level texts. They are more of a dual level text IMO. And none of those cover as many important topics as this one does. And they try to avoid using tensor. But unfortunately, tensor is one of the most beautiful concepts in continum mechanics. Any text book on continum mechanics avoiding using tensor is at most a dual level text IMO.

All books mentioned above have examples with analytical solutions. And some of them are quite mathematical. Most of them have no good connection to real applications. However, you learn critical thinking rather than the knowledge from those examples. So, be ready to sharpen your analytical skills when studying those examples. But do not expect to be able to apply all of them to your real life applications.

Full of errors

The book is great, but FULL of erros. It looks like it never was corrected or edited. There are sign error on equations, missing terms is equations, bad correlation of equation numbers and so on. The overall quality of the book is excellent, but the errors kill it. Luckily the teacher of my class was the author himself so I could ask him and correct the errors as I was reading on. However, if you're buying this book and the author is not your teacher (most likely), then you'll run into some anoying troubles.
