About the Author
Kim Mosley currently lives in Austin, Texas.Formerly he taught photography at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. At Florissant Valley, he received the Faculty Member of the Year Award, the David L. Underwood Memorial Lecture Award, the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching (Missouri), and the Emerson Electric Teaching Award (St. Louis). He received a photographer's fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981 and served as a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1983-84. He has also taught at Bradley University, Southern Methodist University, and Lindenwood University. He received his MFA from Bradley University and his BFA from the University of Illinois (CU). His work is included in collections throughout the country including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson.

Recommend "Workbook for Black & White Photography"

Photography textbooks are very useful for the diligent student, but frequently are not read by most students. "Workbook for Black & White Photography" guides the student in a programmed way, which allows the student to find out what he needs to know to pursue success in photography, without suffering undue pain. The workbook serves both teacher and student and simplifies learning. Having used it for many years in my classes, I can highly recommend this product.

read description of book to best utilize it

I originally gave this book a one star review, with the caption "don't buy this book" My apologies to the author. I did not read the description of the book. Had I done that, I would have realized that this book is written to be used with another book, clearly mentioned, but overlooked by me. So, lesson learned, read product descriptions, get the facts before commenting on a product. Now I must put in a disclaimer. I gave the book five stars, but am in no position to do so, as I have not had the chance to actually use the book. I just wanted to undo my error. I can not give an opinion on this book at this time, but will update if so. In the meantime, check the review of the person who seems to know what they are talking about. Side note to the author: Could I buy you a cup of coffee so I can apologize for being an a@# in person?

White society, the dominant society has never limited itself as a whole. Think about the glass ceilings Blacks have had to burst through throughout history. Blacks have been bursting through the constraint of such barriers and limitations for centuries now. In the last sixty years in America others who have come before you have laid much broken glass at the feet of Black America. Yet, who placed the barriers; who at first constrained us in the boxes with the glass ceilings? Certainly it was not us. We live in a world not of our own making. I want so very much for my Black community, but not that which can be given, nor granted. No, what I want mostly for my Black community must be taken, it must be acquired through express and diligent intent. It can only be birthed through aggressive and intelligent design; whereas, you must commit your life-time to craft it, to engineer your acquisition and construction of it. You must want it with the utmost zeal, and once acquired you must value it as your most prized possession. What I want most for my Black community is true Legacy.

Dameon V. Russell, is the Co-Founder of The Russell Group and the Black Business Council of America, (The BBCA), he is a 25 year veteran of Real Estate, Finance, and Business Development. He has been a noted sales and productivity Trainer and Coach; he is a Branch Owner in Real Estate, Mortgage, and Insurance, and specializes in Commercial Finance. Dameon is the Project Lead for The Russell Group Project, a Small Business Development Center. He believes a lack of Financial Literacy across many Small Business sectors has led to a measurable deficiency in general business acumen and higher fail rates for Black owned Small Business ventures. The Russell Group Project is a Small Business Owner collective self-tasked with increasing the success rate of Small Business through Financial Literacy education, business training, value-added free workshops, and easy access to Commercial Finance. Additionally, Members benefit from education and training on successful marketing strategies, the application of technology in their business, social media techniques, and Business Continuation strategies to ensure the survivability of their business. Dameon Russell and The Russell Group Project are based in the greater Sacramento, California area. The BBCA is focused on the education of Black business owners; this book, Financial Literacy & Ownership is intended to enlighten, empower, and awaken the Black community. Mr. Russell spent time years ago mentoring & tutoring urban students in Oakland, CA public schools. He witnessed first-hand, and worked with many students who had deficient reading and writing skills, as well as an almost total lack of Financial Literacy. High school seniors who were just mere months away from entry into adult society unable even to write a check properly, to say nothing of actually balancing a check book or managing finances. These children, had a horribly miss-guided understanding of Ownership and no desire nor urgency to change that. Mr. Russell began every lecture, and conversation with these youth by explaining to them the value of Ownership by at first trying to define Ownership. Explaining, we don’t own the homes we live in, the cars we drive, the manufacturing plants making those cars, the theaters we see movies in, nor the film companies making those movies. They simply didn’t get it, nor value it. It was then Mr. Russell realized that Financial Literacy was lacking in the students, because it was lacking in the home.

pretty powerful message

Wow, pretty powerful message. Not "militant" at all, just powerful. Dameon Russell has much to say & delivers in this truly powerful and necessary wake-up call for the black community. We Blacks need to bust the stereo types which subconsciously confines us; like Mr. Russell says, it's all about awareness and the only way we get out of the situation is to educate ourselves out. I only hope Mr. Russell's book attracts enough readers to really spark the fire! I recommend this book for EVERY black person!!

This book will make you think.......

I want to applaud the author for telling it as it is and bringing to light a truly necessary message . Generally speaking, Blacks do not own.
The formula to change this reality is increasing our collective understanding of what it means to own, and how to begin to own. I agree with
Mr. Russell, the answer is Financial Literacy. This book has the message all Black people need to hear and to understand the desperate nature
of it. A clear, powerful, well delivered message and not a difficult read. I will be reading it again.

Skip the book, watch a video

First off, I completely believe that the techniques in here are going to be a lifesaver. Every nurse, pediatrician, or midwife I've talked to has recommended these techniques. However, putting them into a book is really stretching the material, and involves a LOT of repetition of the same stories and arguments over and over. This could be condensed into a pamphlet. In fact, I just finished watching Dr. Karp explain the entire book in a six-minute spot on a daytime TV show (found for free on the Internet).

As an expectant parent who wants to be well informed, I have a lot of books on my reading list. This took up way more time than it should have. If you're a new/expecting parent, do yourself a favor and find this info for free on the Internet. If you want to buy this as a gift, do the expectant parents a favor and get the DVD or instant video instead.

I suggest just googling the 5 S's, a LOT of this book is spend babbling on and on justifying their ideas, when you have a screaming baby - you just want them to get to the point! Too much fluff for me, but was good information all in all.

This book was recommended by our pediatrician and many of the tips have worked great for our baby. she will not sleep swaddled but if she is ever very fussy we will swaddle her up. Twe use the other 4 S's basically every time we put her to sleep! The hair dryer on high is our best friend!

An Essential how-to guide

This is not one of the many books on "understanding" [a] serious mental illness. This book is a step-by-step guide to more successful interpersonal relationships between family and patients. No doctor or therapist will ever give you these essential tools, because therapists needn't live a life with your loved one - and may not even know what that life entails in a real and daily way. My daughter is a bipolar patient, diagnosed in 1981. Using this book, I have for the first time negotiated a crisis while knowing what to do and maintaining communication with her throughout the crisis. It is the book I always knew I needed. There is much more to serious mental illness than symptoms and medicine. This is the only book I have found that addresses the "more."

This book contains what so many mental health books lack: advice. The majority of books on mental health offer a medical or personal description of various mental health conditions. This book tells someone who loves or cares for a mentally ill friend or relative how to help and handle them.
It covers the basics of how to approach and talk to someone who may not be behaving or thinking rationally at the time, to how to work with insurance companies and locate help.
I have purchased dozens of books in my quest to help a loved one. While the majority have been useful, this is the one I wish I read first. If you need help understanding and working with mental illness, this book is a great starting point.

AMAZING BOOK! A very real look at the life of a female gang member

I was immediately glued to this book, I couldn't stop reading because I was interested, horrified and amazed! This book gives you a GREAT outlook on why some kids would join a gang, or why they would feel that the gang is their only family. The media today potrays them as "bad" kids, but that is not the case. Some like Sonia, the Latin Queen, it really was the family she didn't have at home. She was basically a punching bag at home for everything under the sun, she was looking for love and respect and she found it in the Lating Kings/Queens gang. READ the book it will amaze and intrigue you, and you will get an honest look!!

This carefully researched and lively edition of a part of Chaucer's masterwork is richly and beautifully produced. While Cohen admits that "Chaucer's words are best," her prose adaptation of four of his tales captures the zest and vigor of Middle English and makes his stories accessible to the modern child. This is not a pedantic translation or a bowdlerized retelling; Cohen does not substitute weak cliches for Chaucer's rollicking and earthy metaphors, nor does she sacrifice the rhythms of his text. Readers hear the bickering of the pilgrims as they decide on which tale they want to hear next, and the rambling voice of the good Sir John as he laments Chaunticleer's fate. Hyman's meticulous drawings not only evoke the rich panoply of 14th century England, but they are faithful to the text in the smallest detail. Each pilgrim is made particular: we see the Pardoner's limp hanks of hair and the Wife of Bath's gap-toothed smile and dainty ankle. Grade 3 Up Cohen has chosen wisely to adapt four stories from Chaucer's masterpiece for children with an overview of the pilgrimage, whetting the appetite for the real thing. She doesn't bowdlerize as Farjeon (Hale, 1930) and McCaughrean (Childrens, 1984; o.p.), who included more stories, had to. Cohen's choices: ``The Nun's Priest's Tale'' (Chauntecleer), ``The Pardoner's Tale'' (revelers in search of death), ``The Wife of Bath's Tale'' (variant of Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady), and ``The Franklin's Tale'' (honor, fidelity, and generosity). She has given equal importance and depth to the tellers and to the tales. Her language, as always, is clear and fine. Hyman's glowing watercolors, bordered in gold, illuminate the tales. She has not painted the characters in flat, medieval style, but has given them the depth that the tales do, bringing them to life, dressed precisely as Chaucer described them, captured in a medieval frame, as Chaucer had framed them in the pilgrimage. this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite

In my humble opinion, this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite, Voyage) or the iPhone (4.7 screen or smaller).

There is also a side-by-side version of this text, which would be better for a Kindle Fire or iPad, iPhone (5.5 screen).

This has a comparative version and a modern version. It is very easy to read and understand. Middle English although poetic, can be overwhelming. The Canterbury Tales is a masterpiece, and deserves a place besides Shakespeare.

Don't buy the Kindle edition

This is not easy to read in Kindle format. In paperback, it has two translations: one in Middle English, the other in Modern English. These are displayed side by side, with the earlier English on the left, Modern on the right. When it comes to the Kindle edition, there are no breaks between these translations. It switches back and forth without any notice, making it really difficult to follow. It would be alright if we could view it page by page (in it's original format), but without that option it's harder to understand. (Yes, it's obvious which part is which, but finding where it stops and starts takes away from the reading experience. It's too choppy.)
In short, buy the paperback or perhaps a different Kindle edition. The format makes this a challenge to read.

good value for a nice edition

If you're looking for a fairly complete (includes The Parson's Tale) hardcover edition of Chaucer's unfinished masterpiece you could do far worse than this effort by Chartwell Books. The modern translation is by Frank Ernest Hill and is serviceable, if not considered particularly trendy by Chaucer buffs (try the Hackett Publishing edition w/ the Joseph Glaser translation if you want trendy). It includes a number of facsimile title pages (in B&W) from the exalted Kelmscott Chaucer published by William Morris in 1896. The woodblock prints were created by Edward Burne-Jones and add to the telling of each tale. Most include snippets of Chaucer's original middle english text.

This is a reader's edition in modern prose and should not be confused with the Riverside Chaucer or other academic publications. It's oversize, sturdily bound and very attractive to boot. At less than $19* it's highly recommended.

* As a point of info for prospective purchasers; this volume is readily available from a variety of sellers and amazon is very price competitive when the volume is in stock. However, when the book was out of stock for the last month or so a flurry of "marketplace vultures" swept in charging $50 & up for "new" copies. This is NOT the "Kelmscott Chaucer" that has been reintroduced; though it is a facsimile and a very nice edition. Don't be fooled and don't pay more than $20 for it. The reintroduced Kelmscott (monochrome) sells for about $40 and is still available.
