Give this one a very careful read!

"Quitters are never winners."

I bet you have heard that before! And generically speaking, it is the truth. However, Geri Scazzero would have us think a little differently about "quitting".

Geri is a popular conference speaker, trainer, and coach for church leaders, women's groups, and married couples, both in North America and internationally. Geri has served on staff of New Life Fellowship Church in New York City for the last 25 years and is the co-founder, along with her husband, Pete, of Emotionally Healthy Spirituality ([...]) - a groundbreaking ministry that equips pastors and leaders with a new leadership paradigm that integrates emotional health and contemplative spirituality. She is the coauthor of Emotionally Healthy Skills 2.0 and The Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Workbook.

I was drawn to the opportunity to review this book for two reasons:
1. The title. In today's society, women are often portrayed as big mushy bags of emotion, so therefore, they need one more book about how to be "emotionally healthy".
2. I was interested as a pastor's wife in hearing what a sister pastor's wife had to say; especially one who had told her husband she was "quitting the church".

In this most recent book, The Emotionally Healthy Woman: Eight Things You Have To Quit To Change Your Life (previously titled I Quit), Geri targets eight things women need to "quit" in order to be emotionally healthy:

Quit being afraid of what others think.
Quit lying.
Quit dying to the wrong things.
Quit denying anger, sadness, and fear.
Quit blaming.
Quit overfunctioning.
Quit faulty thinking.
Quit living someone else's life.

While there were some things in the book, such as Geri and her husband's regular use of The Prayer of Examen (something with which I was unfamiliar), their use of the Enneagram personality test, and the emphasis on being contemplative, that I am still not exactly sure about, there is much that Geri shares that is good in helping one to order their life well.

I appreciated that the Scazzeros wrote about their personal experiences; this helps the reader understand where they are coming from in some of their ideas. While there is much good to take away from the book, I feel that much of what we have here is an attempt to "Christianize" your run of the mill self help idea about "living a life you love". Read the book, but do so with your Bible in hand and a hearty prayer asking God for discernment as you do. Keep the fish and spit out the bones.

Real.

Unapologetic.

This is what I would describe The Emotionally Healthy Woman by Geri Scazzero. She openly shares her story of depression and overwhelming loss of herself while "serving Christ and serving others", and her path to true healing.

Geri shows that you have to stop worrying about what others think, stop always being available and stop not saying NO when you just can't do something. You can only love others as you love yourself, and if you spend so much time serving others that you are empty, you really can't share Christ in His true entirety.

In order to maintain your true self, and your own emotional health, you have to quit.

Quit Denying Anger, Sadness, and Fear
Quit Blaming
Quit Overfunctioning
Quit Faulty Thinking
Quit Living Someone Else's Life
In the chapter of "Quit Denying Anger, Sadness, and Fear", I was really touched at how the Christian world has taken the stance that sadness, anger and depression have no place with faith. If you are sad, overwhelmed, or just plain tired, you are obviously not strong in your faith. Geri's stance that this is a total lie hit me in the heart. If I can just admit that I am angry, or sad, or even afraid, I can move toward true healing. So if I get bad news from the doctor, or my husband tells me his job has been eliminated, it's okay to be angry, sad and afraid. I can admit that I have those feelings, and get true help and healing from the Father. I can get true support from friends. By denying those emotions, I am denying myself the chance to truly heal.

This book was a rare treat for me in that I read it three times in a row, something I seldom do. I was struck at how Geri was able to share her story so openly, and break through all the Christian "norms" that tied her down and left her unable to function. It was like she was writing my story over and over again with each chapter.

This is a must read for any person. Even though the title says "woman", I believe that men can also glean from this lessons in communication, true love, and taking time to refresh yourself.

The Emotionally Healthy Woman

According to the book's introduction, this is a " book about following Jesus and summoning the courage to quit anything that does not belong to his kingdom or fall under his rule." "Quitting is a way of putting off what scripture calls falsehood and the old self." Becoming a Christian is not just about taking on new behaviors and reading scripture, it is also about letting go of thoughts and behaviors that are contrary to the kingdom of God. The author shares from her own life experiences as to how she quit things in her life, including her own church to go on a very personal spiritual journey. What she discovered allowed her to grow in her role as a pastor's wife, woman, and mother, no longer living in false roles and allowing others to control her life, living for others rather than for God. This book would make a great book for a woman's book study as a group or even for individual study. The author uses scripture along with biblical stories to share her points throughout the book. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a serious self study to change the behaviors that don't seem to be working for you.

Very informative

This book gives the non professional welder the basic information needed to weld steel and aluminum. It provides the metal information as well as the welder and filler rod/wire info. It is devided into MIG and TIG sections so that you don't get confused. It is easy to read and it also gives you charts to make your different settings.

TIG & MIG Welding

Look at the price of this product! If you believe that you get what you pay for in this world, this book is not for you. It's just too light in useful information on TIG welding. It's totally outdated with photos of antiquated machines and it gives little information on the techniques of TIG welding. In essence it reads like an introduction to TIG welding with only 77 pages (many of which consist of test questions) dedicated to this subject. Even used at $34, it offers less insights than the free information you can find online. Yes, it's a good introduction to TIG, but no, it's not worth the cheapest price you will buy it for. Keep hunting for something better.

About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

 

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John and Leslie).

 

John A. Suchocki

 

John is the author of Conceptual Chemistry as well as a co-author (with Paul and Leslie Hewitt) of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations. John obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He taught chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and then at the Leeward Community College. In addition to authoring textbooks, John is currently an adjunct faculty member at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. He also produces science education multimedia through his company, Conceptual Productions (www.CPro.cc) and writes and illustrates science-oriented children’s books.

 

Leslie A. Hewitt

 

Leslie is also coauthor of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with Paul and John). After obtaining her geology degree at San Francisco State University, Leslie’s interest in teaching broadened to include educating elementary and middle school students. She completed additional graduate work in geography and education, receiving her California State Teaching Certification, also from San Francisco State University. In addition to writing, she devotes considerable time and energy to bringing science education to young people in engaging ways. She is particularly active in her local school district where she works on curriculum development and hands-on science, organizes interactive science fairs, guest teaches, and works with students on connections between scientific concepts and life in the every day world.

Conceptual Physical Science- Explorations

I purchased this student book and the Companion Teacher's Edition for my 8th grader who is home-schooled. He takes his class with a certified teacher one day per week at an establishment for home schooled children, and is given his assignments, which we carry out the rest of the week. I couldn't live without this book for myself and the Teacher Editiion to go along with it. Not to mention the education I am getting. I of course had Physical Science in school, but it's even more fun the second time around. This book is a great read, even if you're not home schooling. The whys and hows of the way our physical world works is fascinatiing to learn or be reminded of. We take it all for granted.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this text book. We have used it this year with our 2 7th grade boys. It is a challenging for a middle schooler, but good for kids who like science.

Dr. Prem P. Gogia has over 30 years of experience in physical rehabilitation. He is a clinician, researcher, and educator based in Houston, Texas. Dr. Gogia has published 21 research/special interest papers in professional journals. In addition to contributing a few chapters to books, he is the author of four books titled, Clinical Cardiac Rehabilitation, Clinical Alzheimer Rehabilitation, Clinical Wound Management, and Clinical Orthopedic Tests. Dr. Gogia received his MD degree from All Saints University of Medicine, DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) degree from Drexel University, and PhD degree from Texas Woman's University. Dr. Gogia also earned a MBA degree from Southern Illinois University.

About the Author

RENILSON, MARTIN (Prof) has been working in the field of Ship Hydrodynamics for over 35 years.  He established the Ship Hydrodynamics Centre at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in 1983, and was Director of the Australian Maritime Engineering Cooperative Research Centre in 1992.  He started the Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at AMC in 1996, which he ran until 2001 when he was appointed Technical Manager, Maritime Platforms & Equipment for DERA/QinetiQ in the UK.  In 2007 Professor Renilson returned to Australia and set up his own company, conducting maritime related consulting.  He also held a part time chair in hydrodynamics at AMC, now an institute of the University of Tasmania.  In 2012 he was appointed inaugural Dean of Maritime Programs at the Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates, to start maritime education for the country.  He is also an Adjunct Professor in Hydrodynamics at the University of Tasmania, Australia.

About the Author
English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

Victorian Soap Opera

I read this book on my Kindle from the Wilkie Collins Collection. Its not one of his greatest but it is a fine book. A young man suffering from an emotional shock is being manipulated by 2 groups. The first group is made up of friends who want to see him married. The second group is headed by a Catholic priest who wants to see the young man converted and return the Abbey* property back to the Church. [*Lands which were taken from the Church by Henry the VIII in the 16th century and given to the young man's family.] The 2 groups working against each other make the book humorous in the beginning. It only turns tragic later on with a somewhat happy ending.

It is one of Collin's shorter works and well worth reading. If this book was being written in modern times. A fictional cult would be created, but the Roman Catholic Church is useful for the plot because of its views on marriage and divorce.

Victorian prejudice

This book contains tiresome characters in an anti-catholic setting. For a Wilkie Collins book, it is absolutely dreadful. Still, it is a Collins book, so at least it is well written. A man and woman marry. A Jesuit, out to get the man's property, breaks up the marriage and succeeds in making everyone miserable, including the reader. While I had heard of the prejudice against Jews and Catholics in Victorian England, it never hit home until I read this book.

Great Read and awesome characters

This book did not get great reviews and compared to his other books it perhaps was not as suspenseful and a little sad but I loved the characters and the interplay between marriage or religion, who would win and how sometimes religion can take advantage of people who are down on their luck and needing something and so can women for that matter! I also loved the ending. I am loving everything that Wilkie Collins writes and I wish I could have met him. His books will deal with topics that were taboo in his day and that's fun. (Like pregnancy out of wedlock or the sad state of marriage and inheritance laws for women.)

a gripping, action packed, page turner with lots of twists and turns

OMG I can not begin to tell you how fantastic The Last Prophecy Of Rome is. This is actually my first book that I have read by Iain King and definitely won't be my last. This is the pre sequel to Secrets of the Last Nazi, so in my opinion it doesn't matter which way round you read Iain's books. having not read Iain's first publication of the Myles Munro action thriller series. First of all I have to say what a brilliant vibrant cover this book has it really suits the story.

This book kept me highly entertained for two evenings it is so action packed you will not believe it. Myles Munro is on holiday in rome with girlfriend and journalist Helen Bridle. He’s convinced a bomb is about to be detonated at the American Embassy. Then the action starts with a delivery van hurtling through Wall Street in New york when BOOM, showering the sky with a chilling message that America is about to be brought down like the Roman Empire. And Juma an African warlord who is set free by the Arab Spring, plans to make it happen. A US Senator is then taken hostage, Myles finds himself caught in a race against time to stop Juma. Sounds a lot going on but for me this is what made the story. The chapters are titled with the citie and found this very easy to follow with it jumping back and forth to the different cities. Iain's writing skills are magnificent. I actually felt like I was right there with Myles on his adventure.

This book starts off with a bang and had me totally gripped. Myles goes through one hell of a rollercoaster journey where I found myself on the edge of the seat willing him along. The story just got better and better. I loved the hint of romance that was added to the story what a lovely couple Helen and Myles are. And without giving anything away I have to say what an ending I was totally blown away and found myself on the edge of my seat hyperventilating. This book is most definitely going to stay with me for a very long time and would love to see it has a movie! I can not wait to read more of Myles action packed adventures.

If you're looking for a gripping, action packed, page turner with lots of twists and turns this is the book for you. It will have you guessing until the very end which I highly recommend giving it a well deserved 5 stars.

Great Sequel

I really enjoyed Mr King's début novel - Secrets of the Last Nazi - so I do admit to getting a little excited when I heard about this new offering. I was also a little bit scared as I am for all sequels. Will they live up to the enjoyment that the last book gave me? Will they disappoint? Well, I am very happy to report that this one is equal to, if not better than the first!
When reading/reviewing the first book I mentioned that the writing was action packed and punchy. This has continued to be the case here too. It really does go along at a bit of a lick and the reader is dragged along with the cast literally all over the world. The main theme contained within the book is pretty pertinent and quite controversial but Mr King has tackled it very sensitively indeed, giving me as a reader quite a bit to think about.
The history contained within is explained very well for the layman and my interest was so piqued by the Fall of Rome that, had my TBR not been so long, I would have liked to have read more about the subject and I am not really a big fan of history. So hats off to Mr King for making a historical book palatable to me. Again, within my limited historical knowledge what I read makes sense and appears to be very well researched.
Another thing I do like about this author is his characterisation. He writes very well described characters that have their own distinct, individual personalities which are congruent to their contribution / purpose in the book. Apart from the obvious, it is often hard to work out who's the enemy and the real motivations behind their actions as the book weaves its way through twist, turn and dead end before finally revealing something I didn't see coming.
And Myles, dear Myles, he really deserves a special mention for what Mr King puts him through. Often the reluctant hero but always ready to fight for what he believes in and that's rather special.

So, now I have to wait for the next book. Hurry up please Mr King.

This is one of those books where I seriously suggest you just go get yourself a copy instead of reading my review - the book is an amazing, up to date, enthralling read that had me riveted from start to finish.

Myles Munro is a brilliant character, a highly intelligent misfit, expert analyst of military history and something of a maverick. He’s absolutely awesomely different! The knowledge and expertise of the author shines through in this superbly written, highly topical, action packed thriller. I'm putting down the modern day port in Rome to artistic licence....It is a roller coaster, highly emotive and fast paced thriller. Journeying through the historic demise of the Roman Empire to ascertain threats to modern day America with migrants, terrorists, threats to the economy, kidnapping, murder, biological threats, this story has them all - and lots more besides!

I hadn’t read anything by this author before but he’s now one I’ll certainly be looking for in future. The story has a well crafted, intricate and believable plot with so many unexpected twists and turns it will keep you (figuratively) on the edge of your seat. Even the final episodes have surprises in store for the reader! I’m going to get a copy of the earlier novel in this series and will certainly be looking out for any future works by this highly talented author. If you enjoy suspense, mysteries and thrillers this is a not to be missed novel, one I can’t recommend highly enough, totally stupendously, suspense filled and brilliant thrilling read.

the binding is not good at all

The book itself is fine, very easy to read, However I uncovered my brand new book straight out of the package from amazon and opened it and literally within 30 minutes the binding pulled out for my entire second chapter! so now i have a whole chapter that has come loose from the book and the pages are all individuals. If you are required to get this book for school be very careful with it as the glue in the binding for my book was VERY weak. Now it could just have been my book but be aware of this as you read and when you purchase.

I think that this book is completly well done, the ilustrations are superb as well as the explanations and the only thing that I founded wrong is the binding of the sheets. It is very easy that they get loose. That is a shame. Thank you.

I just started using this book, n the pages are already falling apart!!!!

Disappointed!!! The quality should be better than this, as I read more pages it will eventually falling all apart!!! It bothers me so much.

This book won't just sit on your shelf.

This is the best book on drawing that I have seen. I have read through the book several times and now I am going through page by page and practicing each step. His instructions are clear and easy to follow with drawings to help illustrate each step.
I highly recommend this book.

It's Just That No One Taught You How

I took oil painting classes from Bill Martin 40 years ago and still think of him as the best art teacher I ever had. Why? Because he had a knack for laying out an organized and readily understandable structure...step by step. One of those steps is drawing. Don't think you can't draw; it's just that no one taught you the basics. How wonderful that Bill Martin wrote it all down...that his gift for teaching lives on. Plus he was such a good guy. Now all you have to do is practice, practice, practice.

Still Relevant in 2003!!

but the lessons on those pages are taught with such clarity they will stick with you and help when you go further with your talents into areas like colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics or even oils.
The lessons include things like perspective, a lesson taught in just about every book on art written today. It seems so many books cover this topic because it is such a hard topic to teach - notice I say teach and not learn. If it was easy to teach then more of us would learn it and would not have such a hard time with the concept. Bill Martin has touched something in his lessons on perspective, at least for me, and I will never have the same difficulty with perspective again. At least if I do in the future, I will have this little gem to pick up and refer to! He does not cover this topic quickly, but goes into it slowly and covers it quite completely, as he does most difficult topics. I will no sell the four or five books on my shelves devoted to perspective, books purchased to help clarify a topic once so unclear.
The only downside about his book is the section on color theory, which could be much more indepth. There is only a small chapter covering it at the end, almost as though it was an afterthought. It would have been great to see Mr. Martin tackle the important and often difficult topic of color with the same skill he had handled perspective and so many others in this great little book!
