Good book, if you study some background first

This was the first popular esoteric rune book to contain some real academic research on runes. Thorsson's PhD gives him the background, research skills, and access to sources to put together a very impressive work. The awkward, dry, scholarly writing style adds to the perceived credibility.

Unfortunately, as we can see from other reviews, the average reader tends to accept the book as historical facts about the original runic traditions of Viking & pre-Viking times. Although the book is a cut above the New-Age pack, claims of authenticity are misleading.

Although it contains some good research that most of the other rune manuals lack, the esoteric ideas are largely based on the Armanen system invented in Germany in the early 1900s. The Armanen system was typical of the occultism of the day, mixing romanticised & poorly researched ideas about runes with poorly understood techniques borrowed from yoga, and a touch of Western ceremonial magic (itself mainly descended from Hebrew sources). It was a mish-mash of systems not so different from the anything-goes New-Age fusions of today.

The only problem with the book is that it does not always clearly separate recent inventions from pre-Christian sources, leaving the average reader with the impression that it describes a pre-Christian esoteric tradition. It also contains a fair amount of speculation about historical sources that is not clearly identified as such, or made to look more credible than it really is (eg his argument for rune postures). To be fair, if you have done some extra study, and read carefully, the distinctions are often there, but they tend to be worded so that the average reader will not notice when they enter the realms of UPG.

This book is useful to those interested in esoteric runology, but those interested in re-creationist or historical rune magic need to take it with a grain of salt. Read it, but first do the groundwork and look at the historical facts, then feel free to make your own speculations rather than rely on the imagination of the popular authors.

For those interested in a survey of real historical evidence and examples of rune magic, I recommend Runic Amulets and Magic Objects.

Worth reading, if you can follow it

This book first came out in the late 1980's, and many rune magicians still consider it a classic. Several later authors, including Gundarsson, have been inspired by _Futhark_ to some extent.
Thorsson discusses the meanings and magical uses of each rune in detail, backing them with references from Norse pagan texts and Germanic folklore. He does occasionally allude to other esoteric traditions, but this doesn't feel as intrusive as it does in some other books. (My only complaint here is the table of astrological and Tarot correspondences at the end of the book; the runes, in my opinion, should be able to stand on their own as a magical system.)
I would still recommend this book ten years after I first bought it, although Thorsson's language may be too dry and academic for popular readers.

THE KEY TO WHAT'S BEHIND THE FIRST DOOR

This book is REQUIRED READING for those who would dare seek true knowledge of the runes. Other books purporting to reveal the mysteries of the runes are best left to the New Agers -- this is the real deal. Be advised that even though this "introductory" text is "for beginners," it is only for those who truely wish to KNOW. There is no mass-market fluff here! Although I am not entirely in agreement with the teachings of Mister Flowers (Thorsson) and the Rune-Guild, this is, by far, the best book I've seen on the subject matter . . . better even than "Thorsson's" later books for more advanced studies. He has written a number of books on the runes, and, even though I have a working knowledge of runelore myself, a few of them were difficult to read. Fortunately, "Futhark" is not one of them. The only real criticism I have is that, personally, I find the concept of "runic postures" rather silly. Visualize them, carve them, stain them with your blood -- but don't go striking a pose! Aside from that, this was an excellent book, and I recommend it highly.

Great Body Acceptance Book

This is a great body positive body love book. It's funny and really hits home. I seriously thought, "wow, I'm not the only one who thinks like that?" More than once. Her chapter on mental health is above and beyond good. Best line "Happy people don't try to purposely hurt other people." This book is also all inclusive, gay, straight, black white and inbetween.

This book is for everyone not just fat girls! It's for anyone who has ever felt self-conscious or doubted themselves.

I was hooked from the first page! Loved this book so much I purchased two more copies as gifts! Wonderfully written and a strong message.

I randomly discovered this book in a video for JC Penny. Jes exclaims "here's my book" and for a split second it showed the cover. I replayed and paused the video until I could see the title - and I am sure glad I did!

Not just for heavy girls..

I used to be overweight but have lost the weight and kept it off the last 5 years. I couldn't shake the "inner fat girl" as I like to refer to her. Basically no longer being physically overweight but very mentally and emotionally overweight. I'm positive 99.9% of women can relate to this book, overweight or not. Ditch your insecurities and live boldly is what I took away from this book and I suggest anyone struggling with any sort of self esteem issues read it.

This book is a great companion for the History of Americas Class. It covers all the key points that my teachers discuss and has prepared me for all my exams. The book follows the course curriculum to the letter and it offers insights that may not be share in class. In addition, the book focuses on the relevant topics that are most important on the exam. I think all IB students should order books from this series if they are interested in getting the best grades possible and increasing their knowledge of the topics. Hey! I won't say this book is terrible; however, it is not exactly AWESOME. I mean it definitely has its values. It has all the IB topics and stuffs. But it is really like a summary of the things we need to know. Yeah. That is my point. Thanks!

The first chapter, although containing some overall useful material, has way too many errors to be considered for use in my classroom. Jefferson was not a Democrat-- no scholars refer to him as that. John Jay had a huge role in the Federalist Papers, Haiti is on the west side of the island not the east-- and most importantly-- citizens in the northern states were not mostly against slavery. Not at all. People in Boston ran abolitionists out of town. The debate and fight continued well into the twentieth century.

About the Author

Robert J. Houghtalen, Ph.D., P.E., is Professor and Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. Dr. Houghtalen specializes in the areas of hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management. He has taught national seminars for ASCE on a number of computer models including HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and EPA-SWMM. Apart from his academic assignments at Rose-Hulman and Old Dominion University, he has worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wright Water Engineers, Inc. (Denver), the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington D.C., and a humanitarian organization in the Sudan. He is co-author of the Federal Highway Administration’s culvert design manual (HDS #5). Prior to this textbook, he has co-authored two others: Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering Systems, 3Ed. (1996 - Prentice Hall) and Urban Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Stormwater Quality (Wiley).  

 

Prof. Ned H C Hwang received his BSCE from Cheng-kung University in Taiwan, MSCE from UC Berkeley, and PhD in fluid mechanics from Colorado State University. He served as a faculty in Civil Engineering, University of Houston for 25 years. In early 1980s, he developed interests in the flow of blood in cardiovascular systems. He was appointed the Herbert H Herff Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Memphis, TN.; 1991-2000, the James L Knight Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL; Since 2000, he was appointed the Director of Biomedical Engineering Division, the National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan until his retirement in 2007. During his tenure, his also served four times as the Director of the NATO-ASI (Advanced Study Institutes) in Cardiovascular Engineering; Honorary Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the King’s College Medical School, University of London; the Technion, Haifa, Isreal;

First Nanyang Chair Professor, the Nanyang University of Science and Technology, Singapore; the West China Medical University, Chengdu, China; etc. Professor Hwang has published four books in cardiovascular engineering, and holds five US patents. He is also a founding fellow of AIBME; fellow of ASME.

 

A. Osman Akan holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and M.S. and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has over 30 years of teaching, research, and consulting experience in water resources engineering.  His research is documented in 35 journal articles, and numerous conference papers, reports, and book chapters. He received an outstanding journal paper award from the American Society of Civil Engineers  (ASCE) in 1987. He published three earlier books titled, “Urban Hydrology,” “Urban Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Stormwater Quality, “and “Open Channel Hydraulics.” Professor Akan is an ASCE Fellow and a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently he serves as Associate Dean in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.

Great book

This book is well written and takes you back a step or two had you forgotten the basic principles of fluid mechanics or open channel flow. The example problems are very helpful and the small book size makes it nice to carry around. Quite pricy but a great reference to have around for most hydraulic applications.
