About the Author
Simon Mills is the head of sustainable development for the City of London. He is a specialist in sustainable finance, climate change, environmental planning, management systems and policy development. He advises the Bridge House Trust on sustainable development issues and sits on the steering groups a number of pan London and national fora including; the London Climate Change Partnership, the Construction Industries Council Sustainable Development Committee and the London Accord Project Board. He is one of the architects of the London Principles of Sustainable Finance, which took him to the Johannesburg Earth Summit as part of the UK Delegation. Simon has worked in sustainable development for 10 years, prior to which he was involved in environmental research in Central America. He holds an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment and Masters in Public Administration.

Great book but think twice before you buy the Kindle version

I already own the first edition of this great book and decided to buy the Kindle version of the upgraded second edition instead of the printed version because I wanted to be able to use the search function of my Kindle DX and Kindle Mac App. Well, searching works fine but the superb monographs of the thirty or so herbs in this book are not included in the Toc. So if you want to quickly read up on the latest research on Eleuthero, for example, there is no way to find it, because it doesn't have an entry in the Toc. You either have to browse to it or use the search function, hoping you'll be able to quickly recognize the Eleuthero main monograph in the many search results. Neither method is fast and convenient. The index is hard to use to. It only has one entry in the Toc which takes you to the letter A. The letter A alone has 28 pages on my Kindle DX, so if you're looking for an entry under M you may be in for a few hundred clicks. I ended up with making highlight entries for each of the monographs. I use the search function for all other purposes. The indexes are as good as unusable.

In short: this is one of the best books on herbs, but the Kindle version is deeply flawed. It seems to me it's quite easy to correct the main flaws:

1. Add entries for each of the monographs to the TOC
2. Add the letters of the alphabet to the indexes in the TOC, so users can jump to M if they want to look up something under M.

Outstanding book, highly recommended

This herbal medicine book is by Kerry Bone, so what more is there to say?

I'm a naturopathic student in my final year. I wish I had such a book when I started the course... it has taken my knowledge and understanding of herbs to new heights.

When I was doing my clinicals, my supervisor always taught me to use "specifics", i.e., prescribe specific herbs for a particular condition, ex., hypericum for depression, withania and rhodiola for stress, crataeva for kidney stones, crataegus for cardiovascular problems like hypertension, thymus and inula for bronchitis, silybum for cirrhosis or other liver problems, etc.

This book is congruent with my clinical supervisor's herbal treatment approach and reasoning for using certain herbs. It was actually her that suggested I buy this book.

This book compliments another book: "Clinical Naturopathy: an evidenced-based guide to practice" by Jerome Sarris and Joh Wardle. They work well together in understanding what herbs (based on scientific research and clinical experience) are best for X condition.

This book has been a great investment into my education and learning of herbs. Highly recommended, especially for students or practitioners.

The editors, both former students of Lynch, provide a cogent summary of his career and of the role he played in shaping and transforming the American urban design profession during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Each of the seven groups of writings and projects that follow begins with a short introduction explaining their thematic content and their background. The essays in part I focus on the premises of Lynch's work. his novel reading of large-scale built environments and the notion that the design of an urban landscape should be as meaningful and intimate as the natural landscape. Next, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings, ideas that culminated in his seminal work "The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. The examples of both smallscale and large-scale analysis of visual form in part III are followed by three parts on city design. These include Lynch's more theoretical works on complexplanning decisions involving both functional (spatial and structural organization) and normative (how the city works in human terms) approaches, articles discussing the principles that guided Lynchs teaching and practice of city design, and descriptions of Lynch's own projects in the Boston area and elsewhere. The book concludes with essays written late in Lynch's career, fantasy pieces on utopias and offering new design freedoms and scenarios warning of horrifying "cacotopias" to come. Kevin Lynch (1918-1984) studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin and later obtained a Bachelor of City Planning degree from MIT. After a long and distinguished career on the faculty of the MIT School of Architecture and Urban Planning, he was named Professor Emeritus of City Planning. Tridib Banerjee is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California. Michael Southworth is a Professor of Urban Design and Environmental Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.

Transnational thoughts from a human geographer & Latino Veteran of U.S. Army

Lynch (1918-1984), was born in Chicago, IL, raised in NC, and later educated under the tutorage of Frank Lloyd Wright, before leaving to serve overseas with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the Pacific/Southeast Asian Region during World War II (WWII) and returned home to complete undergraduate studies at MIT, served as an urban planner (working in Greensboro, NC), then was asked to return to MIT as a professor. Thus, his work was instrumental in transforming some of the greatest scientific minds when universities in the U.S. accepted professors without doctoral degrees. With this in mind, some of our universities are failing students because they insist on ignoring the experiential knowledge of veterans that served overseas and gained insight into both the destruction of landscapes and reconstruction of urban centers which suffered from catastrophic situations. Working in Latin America and the Pacific-Asian Region of the world in the second half of the twentieth century, Lynch provided both applied and theoretical designs which exist in this book and I recommend it for those interested in geography, landscape architecture, regional planning, and urban development.

Lynch's researches and projects brilliantly organized

Michael Southworth and Tridib Banerjee, former students of Kevin Lynch at MIT's School of Urban Studies and Planning, have organized a brilliant collection of most of Lynch's works. Here we can find his seminal ideas pointed out trough his researches in the field of environmental perception, as well as his urban design projects. The book still presents a good biography of Lynch and serves as a very interesting complement to the books that this fundamental author wrote. It is an extremely important work both to architectural and urban design students as well as to professionals and researches.

Cities are human!

This is THE BOOK for anyone -not exclusively urban planners- who wants to understand not only the physical form of the city, but how its citizens interact with the urban landscape. Through his experience and observation, Lynch reminds us that the most important component of a city -the reason why they are built- are its inhabitants.

About the Author
Anna Thomas wrote her first cookbook, The Vegetarian Epicure, while she was a film student at UCLA, and followed it a few years later with The Vegetarian Epicure, Book Two. When she is not cooking, she writes screenplays and produces films. Her screen credits include My Family, Mi Familia and El Norte, both of which were nominated for an Academy Award. She lives in Ojai, California, with her husband, Gregory Nava, and their two sons.

So you want to make your veggies happy?

It's definitely a cookbook of its time. The illustrations have a homespun look, and the introduction even makes mention of passing around a joint before dinner "to sharpen gustatory perception". I missed the seventies, personally, but the cheerful hippieness of this book is irresistable.
But what about the darn food?
It's good stuff. Not low-fat, really, but if you compare the olive oil, butter, and eggs called for in these recipes a meal would still balance favorably with the average meat-including diet. My favorite section is the one on curries--having had a lot of real Indian it's not QUITE the same, but it's reasonably close. Given that it was written when supermarkets were less global, I can forgive a few shortcomings in authenticity. She gets the basics across with readily-available ingredients. And every one of the curries is delicious on its own merits. There are sweeter ones, spicier ones, sides, a couple of desserts, and it's impossible to go wrong with any combination of recipes in this section.
Most of her soups and stews are also excellent. The ratatouille in particular is fantastic. However, in place of her potato peel broth or garlic broth I recommend saving a lot of time and effort by starting off with plain water and adding extra seasoning, or by the quick & dirty expedience of a veggie bouillion cube or two. It's okay to cheat.
Perhaps the best thing to bear in mind when using this book is that with a lot of the recipes you'll need either a fair amount of time or a liberal dose of common sense when it comes to cutting corners. The author had a lot of time on her hands, to make broth, clarify butter, and let things simmer for an hour. You probably don't, and neither do I. Use the butter plain. Heck, use margarine. Simmer for 30 minutes. Spice a little more heavily. And use that darn veggie bouillion.
It would be nice if we could all be so relaxed and agrarian about our cooking as the author is. Just reading the book is like taking a deep breath. But alas, most of have day jobs and time constraints. Rest assured that you can still use these recipes and enjoy some absolutely succulent grub.

The Vegetarian Epicure, Books One and Two

I love both of these books. These are not cookbooks for anyone who has never cooked or baked before, but for those of us who have, I find both of them to be invaluable.
I've had both of them for close to 20 years, and I finally had to replace both!
From the first book, I adore the whole wheat bread with the optional onion. And, the herb bread makes *fabulous* stuffing for Thanksgiving if you cube it and dry it out a bit in a low oven. I love the "Dutch Cheese and Potato" soup and the recipe for Tomato Rabbit.
From the second book, my all time favorite is "Menestra de Veduras", or Spanish-style stewed vegetables. It's a *lot* of work, but so worth it. Do try it, especially in the spring when asparagus, peas and artichokes are fresh.
Another favorite of mine is the "melanzana al forno", aka "baked stuffed eggplant. Cook this in the summer when you can get tiny eggplants.
Both of these books are based on one concept - freshness. If you can't buy the best and the finest, change your menu. That's always a good philosophy to cook by, and Anna Thomas consistently emphasizes that concept throughout both of these books.
Just remember, this is *not* low-cal, low-salt, low-fat, no-flavor vegetarian cooking! It's almost vegetarian cooking with a bit of "Julia" tossed in for flavor. The dessert recipes are *to die for*.

About the Author

David J. Lubliner is a member of the faculty at a northeast university, where he coordinates a Medical Informatics program he developed a decade earlier. With a Ph.D. in Information Systems and graduate degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science, he is currently part of a team developing a handheld medical scanner.

Prior to teaching, he worked for 10 years at a Fortune 500 company as a divisional vice president of an architecture―computer security group. Before that Lubliner worked as an engineer on the Patriot missile system.

About the Author
LAURIE DAVID is devoted to stopping global warming. She founded the Stop Global Warming Virtual March and has produced several projects that aim to bring global warming to public attention, including the TBS Earth to America! comedy special, the HBO documentary Too Hot Not to Handle, and Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. She was voted Glamour's Woman of the Year for 2006. Laurie lives with her husband and their two daughters in Los Angeles, California.

Cambria is a former award-winning advertising copywriter. She has written articles for Boys Life, Parenting, and the Los Angeles Times magazine. Cambria speaks to children all over the country about reducing their carbon footprint. She sits on the Los Angeles Leadership Council of the Natural Resources Defense Council and lives with her husband and three children in Los Angeles.

Incorrect Critical Charts

Readers should be aware that the the first editions of this book contain a chart (page 18 ) of the past 650,000 years that shows that CO2 emissions rose BEFORE global temperatures. In fact, the chart is reversed - CO2 emissions did rise, but only hundreds (in some cases thousands) of years AFTER temperature rises. For some reason the chart lines are backwards.

Scholastic is planning to issue a revised version with an updated chart, but there will be no revision to the text of the book, which references and explains the chart. I don't know that most kids will notice that the chart does not support the argument, but an important subject like this should be accurate in all details.

With such inaccuracies I do not recommend the book. Explain global warming to your children yourself - and be sure and use accurate information!

Hopeful and Empowering for Kids (and adults too!)

This book is fantastic! It discusses a potentially scary subject in an engaging and surprisingly optimistic way, informing kids while also giving them a feeling of hope and empowerment. The ideas in this book are presented in a clear and clever way. The authors even managed to bring a tone of lightheartedness to an undeniably heavy topic.

The importance of preserving our children's future is not political issue...it is a love issue. And whether you drive a Prius or a Hummer, there's no doubt that we all love our children. This book helps us open our eyes and our hearts to the many small (and not so small ways) we can each contribute to a cleaner, safer earth. And it allows our kids to be part of that healing.

There are so many things kids can do to help care for our world, and this book gives them the tools with which to do it. It also invites them into an age appropriate sense of responsibilty and ownership for the animals and nature that they adore. The book imparts practical, doable ways kids can contribute and lets them know that they (and their efforts) count!
