Up and Running and with Meteor and learn efficient patterns...

I come from a Java EE background so was looking for a fast paced recipes book.
Found exactly what I needed.

This book contains this most fundamentals instructions from how to set up your development environment from scratch to the introduction to the Front-end patterns and Application patterns, it also include testing Patterns and the most important how to deploy our app to the cloud services.

Although being a small book, the author was able to compact all the necessary information for the best understanding of the reader.
I advice to read this book along with some other reference book or documentation to make the most out of the content that the patterns describe.

What fascinated me more in this book was the fact that I was not expecting to find instruction on how to put my app in production since by the name "Meteor Design Patterns", so you get more than you expected.

The book is worth reading and future reference.

Good Intermediate/Advanced Level Book on Meteor. Beginners should look elsewhere for an introduction

At the time of writing, this book is one of the few advanced level books on Meteor that are available on the market. This book guides the reader on a number of best practices for real world meteor development.
Furthermore, the author of the book has a number of open source meteor packages that I have found very useful in my own work. So he definitely knows what he is talking about. For instance, the author does a good job
explaining the importance of reactive joins in Meteor projects, the author illustrates the problem from a UI /UX perspective but ultimately breaks down the technical DDP aspects of the problem and most
importantly provides practical solutions to implementing reactive joins in Meteor. I am giving this book 4 stars for a number of reasons. Given the fact that the code samples are in CoffeeScript,
the editing could be better. Its a bit of a chore to read and understand a code sample given the liberal use of tabs, lack of commas and absent parentheses. This point brings me to my second gripe with the book.
The book is very opinionated. The author tries to mitigate this in the first chapter but one chapter to introduce Coffeescript, Jade and Stylus is not enough. Readers that are not already versed in these technologies will not be able to gain much from this book.
All in all, its a very good intermediate/advanced level book on Meteor. Beginners to the Meteor framework should probably look elsewhere for an introduction but they should definitely come back once they are looking for more advanced knowledge

I plan on using many of there patterns when building my own Meteor applicaitons

Let me start by saying I am not a Meteor expert just someone in the process of learning Meteor. Also just to be clear when you read design patterns in the title think reusable solutions or good practices not along the concept of the Gang of 4 design patterns. I feel like the advice in the beginning of the book about using JavaScript (Coffee) and CSS (Stylus) preprocessors and HTML (Jade) template engines could probably be used with any modern JavaScript framework. Probably good advice in general. From Chapter 2 on the book is much more Meteor specific in the solutions it presents. The different types of variables available to Meteor applications was a good discussion for example. As someone learning Meteor, many of the patterns were very helpful as I think about building Meteor applications and what needs to be done to make a Meteor application search engine friendly.

The product order/shopping cart example used through out the book is helpful and easy to understand as the features are added to it through out the book.

The book has been a good learning tool and I can see it being a good tool to refer to in the future as well. The design patterns presented should be helpful even as Meteor matures and changes of time.

There are also many atmosphere packages discussed and recommended in the book to help solve specific problem this is a nice add because searching through packages can be a time consuming.

Once again

Once again, Shirley Sahrmann presents a great work. I am an amateur interested in human anatomy and physical therapy, and this along with her first book are excellent resources for treating and learning about various common orthopedic ailments. A good knowledge of anatomy is required (I recommend "Anatomy of Movement". Of course, some people will criticize this work for buying in too much to the biomechanics model of pain rather than a CNS dominated model (Janda etc), and for ignoring biopsychosocial factors, but the author and associates experience suggests that correcting postural alignments can have a powerful effect on function. Two thumbs up!

Taking the next step

Shirley Sahrmann set out her theory of movement impairment in her first book in 2001. This was ground breaking work and has worked very well for me in cases of long term or insidious onset pain problems. She covered diagnosis of the shoulder/scapula, low back, and hip.

Shirley has now been joined by a very talented group of therapists/researchers to 1. fill in the acute injury diagnosis (done very simply and elegantly by identifying the part involved and then staging the point in the recovery), and 2. to establish diagnoses for the other areas of the body (neck, elbow, hand, thorax, knee, and ankle/foot.

The organization of the book is much improved with each area again getting it's own chapter, then each movement impairment is outlined with general guidelines for treatment included in an appendix after each chapter. The treatment guidelines are especially helpful since I find myself searching Sahrmann's first book through the body of the text when I need additional ideas for treatment.

Movement System Impairment Syndromes of the Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spines, is a long awaited and very welcome addition to, not only Sahrmann's work, but to the field of physical therapy. We need a cogent, concise, and thorough approach to describing and organizing the various injuries, pains, and function impairments that we see; that is, a diagnostic system. These books are an excellent start.

Very thorough and detailed

As a strength and conditioning coach with a limited level of A&P, this book is a little over my head, and something that I have to study for a while before I get the information I need (i.e. not a reference). I use the book to understand what my customers PTs and/or Chiropractors diagnosis are. I think her other book, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes" is the right book for someone like me; however, if you can afford both they work pretty well together because there are several references in this book that refer to the earlier book.

A very useful resource!

This book simply lists the names of people and places in the Bible and offers a brief definition of their meaning. It is a very useful resource for interpreting the Bible's deeper meaning, because when the meaning of a name is known, it can usually be seen to relate to the context in which it is found.

A near & handy little book!

The seller was on the spot w/ shipping the order to me (luckily we are both from the same state) and I had this nifty little book in no time. This is a terrific resource for those of us who want to dig a little deeper in to the meaning behind Biblical names. I've always felt the Bible was a very deep, multi-layered book and the more I read the more I'm just amazed at this wonderful Book the Holy Spirit has revealed to us thru the ages. The meaning behind the names, places, etc put things in a whole new light. For the serious student, take the Jewish roots approach and things will become much clearer & richer as the customs, meanings, etc just come to life!

This volume provides a systematic comparison of various methodological approaches in corpus linguistics through a series of parallel empirical studies that use a single corpus dataset to answer the same overarching research question. Ten contributing experts each use a different method to address the same broadly framed research question: In what ways does language use in online Q+A forum responses differ across four world English varieties (India, Philippines, United Kingdom, and United States)? Contributions will be based on analysis of the same 400,000 word corpus from online Q+A forums, and contributors employ methodologies including corpus-based discourse analysis, audience perceptions, Multi-Dimensional analysis, pragmatic analysis, and keyword analysis.

In their introductory and concluding chapters, the volume editors compare and contrast the findings from each method and assess the degree to which ‘triangulating’ multiple approaches may provide a more nuanced understanding of a research question, with the aim of identifying a set of complementary approaches which could arguably take into account analytical blind spots. Baker and Egbert also consider the importance of issues such as researcher subjectivity, type of annotation, the limitations and affordances of different corpus tools, the relative strengths of qualitative and quantitative approaches, and the value of considering data or information beyond the corpus. Rather than attempting to find the ‘best’ approach, the focus of the volume is on how different corpus linguistic methodologies may complement one another, and raises suggestions for further methodological studies which use triangulation to enrich corpus-related research.

About the Author

Paul Baker is Professor of English Language at Lancaster University. His research involves applications of corpus linguistics and his recent books include Using Corpora to Analyze Gender (2014), Discourse Analysis and Media Attitudes (2013) and Sociolinguistics and Corpus Linguistics (2010). He is the commissioning editor of the journal Corpora.

Jesse Egbert is Assistant Professor of Linguistics and English Language at Brigham Young University. His research focuses on register variation and methodological issues in corpus linguistics. His research has been published in journals such as Corpora, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Journal of English Linguistics.

The Authority

Although most of the hunts O'Connor writes about could not be done today because the wild places he hunted are pretty much tame now, he does take us on one adventure after another. This book is better than any of the African hunting volumes I have read to date. It resides in a prominent position next to my "reading" chair and fireplace. This is THE classic everyone talks about when they mention classics. If you are lucky enough to find one in good shape, count your blessings and enjoy it. I miss the days when writer's like O'Connor and Carmichael wrote real and objective stories.

I subscribe to none of the modern outdoor magazines. Modern hunting writers write advertising copy pretty much. I prefer to read real stories from men who have actually done that and who are not trying to sell you something you really didn't need to hunt. Alas, we can only find that now in old books.

I really enjoyed this book. The author had a easy read style that engaged and taught at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in big game hunting. If you want to know what to wear though, this isn't the book for you.

A Heart-Pounding Thriller

This is a well written, tightly plotted YA spy thriller with three-dimensional characters and a story full of surprises. The Washington D.C. area high school girl known as Alexandra Gastone -- with the adorable boyfriend who wonders why she’s behaving so strangely, the secret best friend with whom she shares a love of video games, and the devoted grandpa in the CIA -- is actually a sleeper spy, separated from her family when very young and trained for years to replace the real Alexandra. Indoctrinated with an intense patriotism and love of her native land, the so-called Alexandra has given up almost everything about her real self to serve the cause, and she’s sure she’s doing the right thing…until everything get complicated. Suddenly, her life could depend on figuring out where the truth lies and who to trust. I love that this story ended with a satisfying and shocking conclusion, but also cried out for a sequel, which I hope comes out soon! Excellent!

Bourne Identity for teens

...They Call Me Alexandra Gastone is a fast-paced spy thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm pretty partial to spy thrillers in general, and this book did not disappoint. Maclagan managed to capture the every day life of a normal teen and deftly weave it with the taut and precarious existence of a sleeper cell living a lie, waiting for activation. The complexity of the Alexandra's world was very well thought out and plausible. This was a great, nail-biting read and I was happy to see that the author intends a sequel. I really want to know what kind of trouble Ms.Gastone lands herself in next!

An excellent young adult thriller that is a must-read for fans of complex heroines battling against powerful forces..

Teenager Alexandra "Lex" Gladstone has a fairly typical life in some ways - high school, boyfriend, college applications, doting grandfather - but in other ways she's completely unique.. Not just for her two eyes of different colours. Although they played a part in the twists her life took.

Years ago Lex was Milena, a young girl in Olissa, a state that has been battled over by the Russians, Iran, America and others. Recruited to Perun, a training academy for spies, she was groomed as a sleeper agent, indoctrinated to the quest for Olissian independence, then inserted into her mission: replacing the real Lex Gladstone, who died in a tragic car crash with her parents. Milena/Lex is raised by Albert, her American grandfather, who himself works for the CIA. She doesn't know when she will be called on to activate and undertake a mission. Until then, she's a regular American teenage girl. Even if she keeps everyone at distance.

Then she gets her mission, to assassinate the US-friendly President of Olissa, and pin the blame on her grandfather.

TA MacLagan weaves a page-turning tale, that is slickly written, and full of intrigue both in terms of the twisting plotline, and the character of Lex herself. An accomplished and highly trained young woman who battles with herself and where she fits, just like any teenager. Who tries to find a balance between her mission and her life.

There are some echoes of the likes of THE HUNGER GAMES, with its intriguing and kickass heroine up against the world, making choices that affect her and others' lives, and fans of that series may easily be hooked by the adventures of Alexandra Gastone. But TA MacLagan also brings something fresh in her storytelling. A great read.

It fulfils its purpose

As someone who has been working with Oracle for years, I was pretty confident about my SQL knowledge but I decided to buy this book anyway in order to fill some small gaps that I noticed when I checked the topics covered in the exam. I am glad that I did, because the gaps were a little bit bigger than I thought and some of the topics I was feeling very confident about needed some polishing.

As I am used to working with strict naming conventions, a basic question such as whether or not is possible to give the very same name to a table, an index or a constraint never occurred to me before (the answer is yes, as they belong to different namespaces). I also thought that I knew perfectly well everything related to joins but I found little surprises such as a predefined keyword for the Cartesian product (CROSS JOIN) or that a column of datatype TIMESTAMP WITH LOCAL TIME ZONE can be used as a PK but a column of datatype TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE cannot.

The book is well organized and it covers point by point the objectives of the Oracle exam. The examples are well chosen (no need to be in front of your computer) and the way the author explains each topic is so clear that the book could also be used by a beginner as a learning tool. I could only spot a small typo (SEELCT instead of SELECT on page 521) and probably one of the questions on a self test about the use of a pseudocolumn on page 163 that could have been improved a little bit:

SELECT ROWNUM, *
FROM PORTS
ORDER BY PORT_NAME;

It fails with a syntax error but the author didn't mention that it can be solved by using an alias:

SELECT ROWNUM, p.*
FROM PORTS p
ORDER BY PORT_NAME;

But these are really unimportant details. If you have not taken any Oracle exam yet, the one provided with the book will give you a very good idea about what to expect, but be warned that questions in the exam are a little bit harder. For me, this book was a key element for passing the exam and I can surely recommend it.

Got me a passing score after less than a week of study.

This is a great book, covering all of the relevant topics in detail. The chapters and sections are in the order the certification objectives appear on Oracle's 'Exam Topics' page for this test, so it's easy to navigate and find your trouble spots. There are over 200 end-of-chapter questions in the book, and that's all I used to study for this exam. After only a week of study, I passed the exam with no other preparation except for the experience I've gained over the short time I've held my job. I can only imagine how well I would have done if I registered later for the test and gave myself more time.

I initially deducted a point from my review over the Windows-only nature of the included CD (waah, waah, whiny Linux user), but looking back I sincerely believe that this book's printed content alone makes it well worth the low price. It contains all the material you would find in a thousand+ dollar course in an easy-to-navigate, well-written package. You should definitely purchase it if you are planning on taking the Oracle SQL Expert exam.

Worthwhile guide to help you for the exam.

This is my review 3 months after I bought the book but just 2 days after taking the exam......and PASSING it on the first try! This is the 2nd book that I read after first reading Matthew Morris' Study Guide for 1Z0-047: Oracle Database SQL Expert: Oracle Certification Prep.

That one is a small guide (150 pages). Steve O'Hearn's books is 700+ pages. Though I have 17yrs of experience, I knew my SQL knowledge was intermediate but after going through this guide, saying it was intermediate was barely enough. I now TRULY feel that after reading this book and Morris' guide that I feel way more comfortable in saying "expert", but "expert" truly comes with real-world experience. But the guide will help. The end of chapter quizzes and also the accompanying practice exam CD definitely helps.

My advice is do NOT take the practice exams on the CD until you are VERY close to feeling comfortable in taking the real-world exam. And when you do take the exam take them as close as possible to the real exam. Whatever settings there are make sure they mimic the real world.

I studied from mid-April to mid-July, so a total of 3 months and this helped me PASS the exam. It is 120 minutes long (2 hours) and 70 questions total and you must get a minimum percentage right to pass. 66% is passing. Not 66 questions! As that would be a minimum of 94% passing. At that rate, very few people would pass. I got a 78% (55 out of 70). I used up EVERY second. I had 45 seconds left to spare to go over any questions I had marked but alas had little time.

Study long and slowly and take your time, as there's no rush to take the exam. They're offered daily. And good luck.

About the Author
Gary Heyward was born and raised in New York City’s Polo Ground Projects in Harlem. At the age of nineteen, he joined the United States Marines and became a decorated war veteran by serving in Desert Storm/Desert Shield Operation in 1990–1991. After receiving an honorable discharge he served as a New York City corrections officer, working ten years at Rikers Island. In May of 2006 Gary was arrested and convicted for selling drugs throughout the jail. During his incarceration he developed a passion for writing and penned his memoir, Corruption Officer. He was released in 2008 and currently works for the city of New York.

THE G-SPOT

“HEAD CRACK!” the houseman yelled.

“Alright, nobody move!” he said, as he went around the table to collect the money from the bettors.

The game was C-low and at this time my man Fungler was at the top of his game again. It’s a Friday night, payday, and I have every dime in the bank (the bank is the guy who takes the money for bets) on Fungler. I gave him that name because that’s what he yells every time he shoots the dice. I’m his hype, motivating him when he shoots and antagonizing the other bettors around the table to bet against him. Whenever he’d win we both made money. Lately Fungler was on a roll.

Fungler and I would be on our bullshit as usual. When Fungler would get the dice he’d shuffle them, then shake them in his hand. I’d be beside him screaming, “Thrilla in the manila dilla!” He’d shake his head indicating “no.” Then I’d scream, “Feva in the Funkhouse!” He’d shake his head again indicating “no.” Then I’d scream, “Rumble in the Jungle.” Then Fungler would say, “Rumble in the jungle without the fungle kungle,” while simultaneously releasing the dice and watching them register. Every time we did this routine, we’d hear the houseman yell, “HEAD CRACK!”

People who had bet against him would put their heads down or have the shit-face (upset facial expressions). Then a cheerleader from the side would yell, “Double or nothing, I bet he can’t do it again!” A cheerleader is a person on the sidelines with no money, talking shit about somebody else’s money! Fungler gets the dice, but before we go into our routine, in walks Chuck.

Chuck’s money is long. He has a lot of it. Every time Chuck comes in, muthafuckas who are scared, and have the bank with a lot of money in it, normally pass it to the next bettor. They don’t want to take a chance of losing it all in one shot. Everybody knows Chuck will stop up your bank—putting a large amount of money down on a bet equal to or more than what you have.

Everybody knows the routine, but not Fungler. Fungler’s eyes lit up. He hollered at Chuck, “Get down, nigga. I know you ain’t come here to sightsee!” Fungler looked at me with a shit-eatin’ grin like, “I got this nigga!” I looked at him like, “Muthafucka, just pass the bank!” Then somebody on the side said, “Look at this STD (scared-to-death) ass nigga!” and everybody laughed.

Yes, scared ass nigga, a person who tries to gamble with the big dawgs but really has a low-paying security job, and has no business being at the gambling spot in Harlem, or anywhere else for that matter, ’cause he knows that he is living PTP (paycheck to paycheck). If he loses his money this payday Friday night, he will be like Sidney Poitier in A Raisin in the Sun when Willie runs off with all that money.

“Willie, don’t do it, Willie, not with that money, Willie!”

Yes, scared nigga. That would be me! Gary, Gee, Big Hey. It all depends on who is calling me. My momma calls me “Boy” or “Nutmo,” aka scared nigga!

So Chuck dropped his stack. And Fungler started talking shit, saying, “After this roll all you working niggas are going to be sick! You’re gonna throw up on your way to the ATM! I love taking a nine-to-five nigga’s money, but taking a hustler’s money is like winning ten thousand dollars on one of those scratch tickets. What is that?” Fungler asked the crowd.

“FREE MONEY!” everybody replied.

Everybody except me. I was busy trying to get this nigga’s attention to pass that muthafuckin’ bank! Fungler continued to shake the dice, ridiculing Chuck.

“Taking a hustler’s money is like going to Rent-A-Center, getting a whole bunch of shit delivered to your apartment, then moving to Brooklyn!”

Again, everybody laughed, except me. I was still in scared nigga mode!

“Getting his money is like going up in a bitch raw dog and not worrying about kids ’cause she got her tubes tied!” Fungler continued, and said, “What’s that?”

“FREE MONEY!!” They all laughed.

I’m over here figuratively sharting on myself, like when you think you have to fart but mistakenly shit on yourself instead. Chuck screamed out, “Nigga, would you stop walking the cat walk and just roll the muthafuckin’ dice!” Fungler shook them, then looked at me. Man, listen, the look I gave him was not a confident one. I did not even play with this nigga.

“Fungle in the rumble jungle kungle without the ungle dungle sungle?” I screamed out. Whatever the fuck that meant.

Fungler threw the dice. It seemed like it took an eternity as they flew past my face. At that moment all I could think about was my kids asking me for Michael Jordan sneakers, my past-due rent. Mom Dukes ain’t taking no shorts on rent. If I lose, how am I going to get to work next week? Willie, don’t do it!

The dice hit the wall and registered one-one-six! Fungler screamed, “HEAD CRACK!” I momentarily blacked out, then came back screaming, “NIIII-ZZIIIII-GAA!” After the house collected the money, totaling about sixty-six hundred dollars, I went over to Fungler and copped out, saying, “Yo, man, I gotta go.” So Fungler passed the bank. We split the dough. I tore the door off its hinges getting the fuck out of there.

Not a Pity-Party - Just the Real Deal

This is a very accurate book in terms of the daily-workings of large inner-city jails. I have a few close friends who are Riker's Island CO's, and the stories they tell me over the years are identical to those depicted by Heyward. This book is not "dumbed-down" as described by another review - rather, it's written in the dialect of many CO's and inmates. I also don't understand how anyone can be "confused" by the writing. Fine literature it is not; rather, it is a simply written story of one man's life/story. In addition to the casual reader, I recommend this book for those considering or entering corrections. Having visited clients on Riker's Island, I can personally attest that the "Island" is a world of its own. Heyward takes you directly into that world.

Gary Heyward's CORRUPTION OFFICER reminds us when faced with a choice to choose wisely

When it comes to looking at life and our choices and what can be the consequences of our actions, I think Gary Heyward's book CORRUPTION OFFICER is a great reminder for us all.

It takes us not just into the life and decisions he made, but what happened when the truth of his life was revealed and the abuse of authority that he had been entrusted became known. Gary takes us not just into his life as an officer trying to do his job but also the Gary that was looking after himself.

He talks about the way he treated those who loved him, the way he treated inmates and even the way he treated fellow officers. This is a book that lets us know that no matter who we are, what we wear or what title we have at the end of the day we are all accountable for our actions, and one day we will have to give account to what we have done.

When tables turn on Gary he better understands the importance of doing what is right. Now he can use his story to let others know the pitfalls of making bad choices and not allowing greed to blind us to doing what is right.

Definitely a book that speaks to the heart of everyone faced with good versus bad, Gary Heyward invites us to learn from his life and choose wisely.

A painfully honest memoir *

Corruption Officer is an excellent read of such a compelling tale. I read this book in 1 day, couldn't put the book down. Author Gary L. Heyward showed that anyone can make a mistake. He gives you insight into what happens behind the scenes in prison whereas in some situtations we would never even imagine. I recommend this book to all, but specifically to those needing encouragement on how to perservere through it all and rebuild a life after trying times.
