In the preface to A Moveable Feast, Hemingway remarks casually that "if the reader prefers, this book may be regarded as fiction"--and, indeed, fact or fiction, it doesn't matter, for his slim memoir of Paris in the 1920s is as enchanting as anything made up and has become the stuff of legend. Paris in the '20s! Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, lived happily on $5 a day and still had money for drinks at the Closerie des Lilas, skiing in the Alps, and fishing trips to Spain. On every corner and at every café table, there were the most extraordinary people living wonderful lives and telling fantastic stories. Gertrude Stein invited Hemingway to come every afternoon and sip "fragrant, colorless alcohols" and chat admid her great pictures. He taught Ezra Pound how to box, gossiped with James Joyce, caroused with the fatally insecure Scott Fitzgerald (the acid portraits of him and his wife, Zelda, are notorious). Meanwhile, Hemingway invented a new way of writing based on this simple premise: "All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know."

Hemingway beautifully captures the fragile magic of a special time and place, and he manages to be nostalgic without hitting any false notes of sentimentality. "This is how Paris was in the early days when we were very poor and very happy," he concludes. This restored version of Hemingway's posthumously published memoir has been revised to reflect the author's original intentions. The result is less a fluid narrative than an academic exercise, with the bulk of the story—Hemingway's travels, escapades, encounters with other writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald—followed by material read by his son and grandson, and some additional sketches and fragments excluded from the final draft. John Bedford Lloyd is faced with the burden of providing a passable version of Hemingway's voice and largely succeeds, but it's much more satisfying to listen to Hemingway's son Patrick, and his grandson Seán, who, in addition to sharing their own reminiscences, offer a hint of what Papa himself might have sounded like. Atrocious typography just kills a great book

A MOVEABLE FEAST
I wrote this review originally for a previous edition no longer offered by Amazon but
it applies just as much to this new (?) edition.

This review is not about the work by Hemingway. This is great book.

The same cannot be said about what I will call the typography. Or rather
the lack of it. The text is essentially a raw scan of a paper edition with
many, much too many, mistyped words and many more false new
paragraphs created, most of them in mid-sentence.

I mean how difficult can it be to search for and destroy any carriage
return not preceded by a full stop.

In short we have here an atrocious text rendering making for a labored reading.

And what happened to the promised illustrations and manuscript pages ?

Please,please, correct this Kindle book and reissue it to all buyers.

things to note about this edition

When I went looking for A Moveable Feast, I wanted the original 1964 version. I was extremely irritated that it is not available in any form except as a used book. In particular, I wanted it in e-book form. All that was offered was this "restored" version. If the author himself had done the restoring, as Anthony Burgess did with the American version of A Clockwork Orange, that I could understand. But when the restoring is done by someone else, I really have qualms about that.

Hemingway's last wife was probably closer to Hemingway than anyone else at the end of his life. At that point in his life he was suffering from mental illness. So I think she did a fine job with the original version. He may have had some nasty things to say about some people he knew when young. He may have used some strong language than refined people are not used to hearing/reading. But this was Hemingway. By his age in that last year, his conversation was probably peppered with both.

When the publisher and Hemingway's surviving relatives decided to reissue this title but to revise it also, then the publisher and online bookstores have a responsibility to the reading public to make sure the public knows this is a different version than the original. It should have separated reviews from the original. It is, in essence, a different book because it is not word for word the same as the original. The fact that they retained the title of the book given to it by Mary, rather than also renaming the book, makes me feel they are financially riding on her coat tails after she is dead.

Also, I have done some additional research online. The restoring by Hemingway's surviving heirs took place in the mid to late 1990s. So, the dividing line for reviews of the original version versus the restored by son/grandson version should be in the 1990s and not 2009 (although I think the e-book version this review is appearing under was published in 2009).

My research also indicated that Hemingway's second wife married him very rapidly after his divorce from Hadley and also after he had published his first successful novel and was now a financial success. I sincerely doubt she would have married a yet unsuccessful Hemingway. I am old now and sometimes cynical. This part of my research left me with unkind feelings toward the second wife, which I seem to be extending in a biblical fashion also to her descendants, the heirs who modified this book. I don't know why I don't blame Hemingway. It is true we women can be catty about other women, sometimes not justifiably (but sometimes we are dead on right).

Personally, I was really not "ready" to read any Hemingway until I was past the age of 20 (except for The Old Man and The Sea). Even though Hemingway started his career at around the age of 20, he was not your average sheltered middle class American kid of that era (or mine). In fact, except for light fiction, I think all adult books read when one was a teen should be reread again after you are an adult. Don't base your opinion of a writer's work on an adolescent reading.

Any favorable reviews of this title that are dated before mid 2009 are not referring to this edition but to the prior edition(s) edited and printed from a 1964 manuscript. This is an entirely different edition, not the beautiful 1964 edition but a malice tainted rewrite by his one of his grandchildren. I think it is irresponsible of Amazon to allow the reviews of the 1964 edition to be applied to this edition which has enough changes made to it that it is not the same book. I beg Amazon to correct this mistake.

Warning in the New York Times

As an author, I am concerned by Scribner's involvement in this "restored edition." With this reworking as a precedent, what will Scribner do, for instance, if a descendant of F. Scott Fitzgerald demands the removal of the chapter in "A Moveable Feast" about the size of Fitzgerald's penis, or if Ford Madox Ford's grandson wants to delete references to his ancestor's body odor.

All publishers, Scribner included, are guardians of the books that authors entrust to them. Someone who inherits an author's copyright is not entitled to amend his work. There is always the possibility that the inheritor could write his own book offering his own corrections.

Ernest was very protective of the words he wrote, words that gave the literary world a new style of writing. Surely he has the right to have these words protected against frivolous incursion, like this reworked volume that should be called "A Moveable Book." I hope the Authors Guild is paying attention.

An excellent addition to every strategist's bookshelf.

The author presents a system for identifying critical competitor data with a series of analytical frameworks to help develop strategic insights. This work is massive in scope and depth. It shows how to assess competitors and use this information to develop strategy. Fahey details how to gather information about every aspect of competitors. Each chapter ends with a brief, helpful summary. An excellent addition to every strategist's bookshelf.

Comprehensive

This is by far the best book of its kind in that it provides a wealth of material on aspects of competitors and competition. Fahey's analytical methods are unique, and based on years and years of teaching and consulting. This one is both meatier and has better flow than some of his edited books or the Portable MBA edited volumes he has co-written. In reality, if this book is any indication, I'd like to see Fahey sole author more books.
The first four chapters constitute a framework for competitor learning. These chapters will be more appealing to academics than practitioners, alhtough practitioners will benefit from understanding the theory underlying his approach. Part 2 provides chapters on analyzing specific aspects of competition, and will be of greater benefit to practitioners.
Although I very much like the content of this book, it is not an "easy read" and must be digested slowly and carefully. Nevertheless, it is worth the effort. The only thing I would have liked more would be a practitioner-oriented, "how-to" approach to using some of the models and tools that Fahey illustrates in the last 11 chapters. Also, as in most any book of this type that has space and size limitations, the focus of the analysis will be on areas the author sees as important, while some other areas (such as customers, financials, accounting) will be necessarily excluded. Fahey's choices will certainly appeal more to the top decision-makers of organizations, and many of the CEOs I work with would benefit from exposure to this volume.
There is an assumption that the reader will have a substantial business schooling or experience background. If you do, you will appreciate this all the more. If you don't, I'd suggest you get one of Fahey's or other authors' Portable MBA series volumes first.

Great strategic value!

As an avid disciple of strategy and leadership, I find this book a valuable companion to Porter and Sun Tzu. Unlike many CI books which dwells heavily on the "tricks of the trade" and "checklists", Liam Fahey's work provides the reader a set of conceptual frameworks for appraoching the whole CI process. This leads to a better understanding of the competitive environment, its dynamics and opportunities to win. Mr Fahey's thoughts would make a great MBA course. But until then, this book gives the reader a first-mover advantage over those who are still in the dark ages of strategy and competitiveness.

Vernon J. Geberth, M.S., M.P.A., B.B.A., FBINA, is a former lieutenant commander of the New York City Police Department with over 40 years of law enforcement experience. Vernon Geberth has provided law enforcement with another major contribution with his book "Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation-Practical and Clinical Perspectives." The text is specific to death investigation, up to date, state of the art, accurate and easy to read. Although the material is oriented towards the serious homicide investigator it is valuable to all police personnel (uniformed and non-uniformed), because of its valuable insight into crime scene investigation and preservation by the initial responding officers as well as its contribution to in enhancing any officer who wishes to advance thru the ranks.

In addition to providing valuable insight to the initial responding officers in the preservation of the crime scene it provides knowledge to ancillary police personnel as they may be called upon to assist the chief crime scene investigator.

The case material is reflective of Geberth's remarkable insight into aberrant human behavior and the significance of such concepts as linkage and "linkage blindness" in investigative protocol. The concepts of "signature" and profiling are expanded and built on sound psychological principals. The assessment of psychopathy and sociopathic personality represents the latest understanding of both psychological and law enforcement perspectives.

The section on child related homicide is especially timely and one of the most comprehensive presentations I have seen anywhere. In each section the author has integrated behavioral aspects with a contemporary analysis of state of the art criminal forensic techniques. He has consulted the major contributors to each subject allowing the reader a comprehensive view of the work of leaders in the fields of both law enforcement and psychology.

There are so many seemingly subtle and direct admonitions and directives that one has to read this book thoroughly to realize how thoroughly researched the material is. Properly studied, this volume will not only keep the homicide investigator out of trouble but will enhance his investigative ability enormously contributing to outcomes.

The specific suggestions for interrogation have proven their value over time in countless cases. For example, setting personal feelings aside and allowing the suspect to develop his subterfuge and perception of being "smarter" than the police has proven enormously effective in case after case.

The chapter on crime scene investigation is the best I have seen in the forensic literature, being clearly written, concise, contemporary and comprehensive. This chapter alone is worth the purchase of the book.

As a former biochemist I found the chapter on DNA well researched and very practical. The newest techniques for utilizing DNA are expanded and discussed along with the historical development of this remarkable forensic technique. The author demonstrates how DNA is the most important advance in law enforcement since fingerprinting and the text comes alive with his enthusiasm and practical sense of application. The reader is transported to the crime scene where the complex mysteries become commonplace.

The "hard science," techniques of preserving and analyzing evidence and administrative procedures are interwoven with the behavioral aspects of a large assortment of crimes. This allows the reader to gain an understanding for a solid foundation to prosecute especially with regard to crime scene linkage and signature.

The thought processes of a serial rapist or killer are just one example of how the author

integrates material from various sources including the updated concepts of criminal behavioral profiling and its associated psychodynamics, signature and "MO," with the issues of control, dominance and sadism.

Throughout the book there are references to recent Supreme Court decisions regarding issues associated with search warrants and the involuntary confinement of sexually violent predators, as well as legal defense tactics in use, all of which compliment the investigating officer's repertoire of knowledge.

This book took courage to write and the author does not mince words or principles! This volume is a must for every homicide detective and should be studied daily. "Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation" is the most comprehensive and up to date text regarding sexual death investigation that I have come across in the forensic and psychiatric literature. This book is a gift to the law enforcement community and a contribution of historical importance.

Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation is a must read for every profiler, homicide and sex crimes detective, social worker, prosecutor, researcher, and student of sexual homicide. With both formal education and a wealth of experience, Vernon Geberth delivers an easy to read, straight-forward look into the minds of sexual killers. The book delves not only into the psyche of these offenders but also addresses how to catch them. Horrific case after horrific case is presented to demonstrate how these killers gain access to their victims, why they do it, and how police can successfully investigate. In addition, Geberth addresses the wider problem of how a lack of personal responsbility in this society permits the type of narcissistic and psychopathic behavior displayed by sexual murderers. Everyone serious about examining sex-related homicides should read and re-read this excellent book.

Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives is state of the art.

The key word in the title of Vernon's book is "Practical", as it is the key in his first book, Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques, and in his Practical Homicide Investigation Seminars. Vernon has combined his years of experience, training and research to present the reader with an integrated text to use in sex-related death investigations. From the case presentations and underlying methodologies to the reference lists for crime scenes and investigative follow-up, this book is an investigative aid that you will want to add to your crime scene kit. While the book looks great on your office shelf, its real value will shine in the trenches of the death scenes that you work.

To solve murders, both traditional and bizarre, investigators look for the motives behind the crimes. We all know that sex is a dominant motive driving many of the murders that we investigate. The first two chapters of the book familiarize the reader with the investigative significance of sexual deviance and remind us not to let our logic impede our comprehension of the perp's logic that is driving the perpetrator during a murder. Vernon then takes us to the crime scenes of numerous examples of sexually-motivated deaths and, with the expertise that only a murder cop who has investigated and consulted on 8,000+ cases can do, explains the cases and the vital investigative strategies used to resolve the cases. Hopefully you will never be called to the scene of a homicide committed by a psychopathic sexual sadist such as David Ray in Chapter 12 or Bittaker and Norris depicted in Chapter 14. If you are called to such a scene and you have prepared yourself with Vernon's book, you will recognize what you are facing and what you need to do to resolve the case.

It is hard to pick a favorite chapter when all of the information is so crucial, but Chapter 13, Investigative Analysis: Criminal Personality Profiling and the Signature Aspect, is a very enlightening view of the concept. As Vernon points out, detectives and criminal investigators routinely employ these techniques in their investigation of violent crime on a case-by-case basis. The explanation, suggested application and the cases presented in Chapter 13 illustrate that the most effective homicide investigators are the ones who supplement their experiences with knowledge, flexibility and commom sense.

Vernon's compassion for resolving murder caes continues to shine in this latest book, his gift to the men and women entrusted with the responsibility of investigating death cases. I highly recommend it to all professionals involved in the investigation and prosecution of homicide cases. His passion for his work inspires me to approach every case with the conviction and goal to find the truth and see that justice is done. With God's help, Vernon's guidance and our own commitment, we can make sure that the victims of violent death have a champion in their corner.

Meticulously written and illustated - a pleasure to use

A refreshing approach to teaching is reflected throughout The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics which is a book meticulously tailored for new Blender users. When learning to master the graphical user interface (GUI) with its access to the functions for modeling, rendering and animating beginners feel as if they have a patient instructor sitting beside them guiding them every step of the way.

Blender is a comprehensive program which includes modeling objects and characters, the application of colors and textures, the creation of scenes for still images and animations and rendering with Blender's inbuilt system or external render engines. The book explains the use of the interface and the many tools included in Blender in a step by step method which guides the student gently through the process.

Blender instructors, as well as students, welcome The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics because in addition to the detail and reliability of the content, the author has taken an empathetic approach towards teaching beginners. Each section is explained and illustated carefully yet succinctly, and because the basics of Blender remain constant, none of the information is obsolete. This is a unique instruction book for new Blender users as well as a valuable tool for Blender instructors. The high standard of the content makes this book a pleasure to use and to review.

Excellent Concept - Poorly Executed

Virtually everything I know is self-taught and I rely heavily on books. I actually like to read manuals. When I decided to learn Blender I was thrilled that a book was actually available somewhere. Blender books are very hard to find and the Blender site wiki is almost as intimidating as the program. I didn't hesitate to snatch up this book.

By all appearances, it is a beautiful book. The quality is top notch. The text is clear and the illustrations are perfect. Thus earning the two stars. When you go to use it, you'll quickly discover where the other three stars were lost.

This is not a book filled with tutorials, it is definitely a reference book. The contents do not flow very well and it almost seems to be written by someone without strong English skills. You would think that someone would have cleaned this up for such a high quality publication. It's not impossible to get through, just not the best.

The other issue is the material that is not here. Blender is extremely progressive and they make updates all the time. Recent updates are enormous and include Cycles and Bmesh. These are not trivial features. This is no fault of the author, it just happens. In the world of Blender this is a huge problem and in retrospect, now I understand why there aren't many Blender books.

Those two problems are annoying, but not a deal breaker. However, the biggest problem with this book is the index, it is awful. If you are familiar with most programming reference books, or "bibles", you'll know that the indexes are extensive and meticulous. The author knows that they are dealing with people that will need to refer quickly to a passage for a specific technique. How can you possibly find anything without this reference? For all I know, the book could be a complete treasure trove of information, but I don't have a photographic memory. I would never be able to find it again, if it did exist.

The last time I tried to use this book it ended in such utter frustration that I decided to use the Amazon Trade-In program and at least recoup some of my money. The book was simply worthless to me. If you are a book learner, like myself, you're out of luck with Blender. My best suggestion is a tutorial site like CG Cookie combined with the Blender wiki. Not ideal, but that's my conclusion.

This book is to be highly commended for teaching the basics of Blender modeling and animation in a clearly written, logical step by step method. It is a quality book which is user friendly from start to finish! It is an excellent book for getting started with Blender because the well written text is very easy to follow and is complemented by high quality images and diagrams. I recommend The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics to anyone wishing to learn computer modeling and animation using Blender and it would also be a great textbook tutorial or reference manual. I have no hesitation in giving this quality publication five stars.

Getting technical about non-technical skills

Following the introduction, the book is structured around chapters on 7 'non-technical' (i.e. human factors related) skills. These are: situational awareness, decision making, communications, team working, leadership, managing stress and coping with fatigue. There are then 3 more general chapters on identifying, training and assessing non-technical skills. The examples used are mostly from aviation, offshore and surgery. There are extensive bibliographies after each chapter. While covering some complex subjects the writing style is very accessible.
