Dog fights at 300k feet

The author is well-versed in his subject with very technical explanations which fit well into his story. The novel is older, but although dated, kept me enthralled to the end. The old Russia vs. U.S. is there, but with a new adversary which requires their close cooperation to defeat. Makes me want to research and learn more about the possibilities of intra-orbital flight, both military and commercial. The characters were very realistic - both good guys and bad guys.

Suborbital experimental planes ran into opposition they did not expect...

Black Sky is about a joint US Russia program to develop ultra-high flying sub-orbital craft (higher and faster than the vaunted SR-71) and how it ran into a mysterious opponent, who seem to be present whenever there is a satellite or payload launch malfunction. While the writing and flying is great, the plot seem to plod along slowly, as the opponents have been shown early, albeit separate from each other and you know they are going to collide, rather than presented as a mystery from one side's view only. There's some additional plot points about spies, intrigue, bungling bureaucracy, and so on that doesn't add too much to the plot, IMHO, of course. Reads a bit like slower paced version of a Dale Brown novel.

Recommended if you like the subject and his previous books. Not a must-read though.

Raw, honest storytelling! An autobiographical masterpiece!

Before I read "Pimp, Iceberg Slim's reputation was known to me through other celebrities such as Dave Chappelle and Ice T. Therefore, I didn't intend to review the book through my disdain for pimping and the way women are treated. With that said, this is one of the best books that I've read in years. I must admit that I am partial to autobiographies, but this book was superbly written. The characters were well constructed; the imagery and metaphors used to describe Slim's interaction with the characters and environments were brilliant. I enjoyed the colorful language, and was anxious to compare my interpretations of words with the actual meanings in the glossary. "Pimp" is a great example of raw, honest storytelling. As I enjoyed this novel, I felt like I was listening to the story flow from his lips.

Slim claimed to have an I.Q. of 175. I don't doubt it at all. Like Denzel's character so eloquently stated in movie "Malcolm X", "Indian Archie might've been a mathematical genius. We were all victims of the American social order. Until that time, there were three things I was always afraid of: a job, a bust and jail."

"Pimp" is a great piece of American literature.

Raw & Mesmerizing

It had been literally months since I last read a full book and "Pimp" has rekindled my passion for prose. The content of the story is deeply disturbing yet delivered with a linguistic swagger that keeps the reader enthralled and oftentimes in awe. It is a glimpse into the psyche of not only a mid-century American pimp, but the identity of urban African Americans through the lens of "the street". The detailed journey, which is recalled from the depression through the late 1950's gives the reader a startling insight into the thought process of a young adult yearning to realize underworld ambitions. The lengths the author goes to in order to grasp this dream and the depths to which he sinks are sometimes astonishing but more frequently sickening. He is acutely aware of the immorality of his profession yet vehemently pursues it with icy selfish indifference. This is not simply a stylistically groundbreaking book about some pimp. It is a commentary on the state and the plight of the African American struggling to find a place in the burgeoning post-war era of American history.

Icebergs shocking recount of his life as a pimp and addict allowed me to see the ugly dirty struggles of life in the underworld of. crime, hustling,,the sex trade and exploitation of women, and willing, consensual voluntarily choosing to become a slave in an effort to survive , belong and feel loved ,and valued as a successful whore/ pimp/ thief/ con... I walked the seedy, dangerous streets of crime in the inner_cities and d experienced serving a prison sentence in a filthy dangerous prison safely in the comfort of my home because Iceberg had the audacity and skill to transport me there. This is an enlarged thriller told excellently that captivates the reader to desire to keep turning the pages desiring to finish the transporting story in one sitting. Loved it!

About the Author
Shirin Ebadi, a worldwide advocate for human rights, is the first Iranian and first Muslim woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (2003). Her book Iran Awakening has been translated into forty languages.

Telling Us All About It

I was very excited to order and read this book given Shirin Ebadi's status as a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The story relates the family history of a close friend of Ms. Ebadi's and the tragic lives of the family's three brothers.

Although the beginning of the book seemed disorganized and a little confusing, things settled down as I began to understand the main characters and their personalities. Although Ms. Ebadi is the narrator, the book is not really about her or her life. It is about her friend's family and three brothers, all of whom chose different political beliefs and associations.

From this book I gained insight into the culture, traditions, religion, and politics of Iran from the 1900's until today. I gained additional respect for the people of Iran and the stresses and the hardships they live with daily. I applaud Ms. Ebadi for relating what must have been a difficult story. Even though the book itself may not directly change the status of people in Iran, she has done what the Iranian sociologist Ali Shariati suggested (on page 252 of Ebadi's book) and that is "if you can't eliminate injustice, at least tell everyone about it". Thank you, Ms. Ebadi, for telling us all about it.

Powerful story tha needed to be told

I have tremendous respect for Shirin Ebadi, having read her book Iran Awakening, and the modern peacemakers book Shirin Ebadi. This is a woman committed to Human Rights as well as love for her country. She shows in this book three different perspectives of the three brothers who were family friends for many years. For those of us who wonder how perspectives are shaped, and lives lived so differently in one family and all of the Moslem fait she sheds light on just that, while making clear her deep need for social justice in Iran. Dr. Ebadi is a key founder of the Nobel Woman's Imitative, a group of Nobel Prize winning women working together to raise awareness in creating nonviolent social change. I consider this book a must read for those interested in the struggle for human rights in Iran,or anywhere else.

Disappointed.

Full disclosure: I am truly prideful of Shirin Ebadi and her courageous work, that has led to becoming a human rights noble leader and role model for our [now] broken country.
My review is specifically in regards to this book.

Cons:
1- Lets be honest, first of all, the cover image is misleading. I really thought this book is about the three main mullahs (Beheshti, etc.) that were the key players in the islamic revolution and Khomieni's inner circle. Particularly because the cover image shows three mullahs standing before a large crowd, and introduction refers to "three brothers" which was interpreted as the Islamic brotherhood.
2- The first half of the novel is a bit unclear and scattered. Some of my early questions were answered later after getting through the first 100pages.
3- The story is quite bias. The political events and some characters are portrayed in a very specific bias way.
I am quite disappointed that Shirin Ebadi didnt try to maintain a neutral position in regards to the political events and figures such as the Shah, or Khomeini, etc. especially considering that this is a 'novel', the story of how a family (one of millions) got destroyed throughout the country's internal turmoil. Her personal perspective and beliefs definitely set a different tone to the whole story and skew the reader's point of view.

Pro:
1- The book explains the regime's dark sides quite well. The horrific events, brutal mass murders, blind and heartless followers of the regime, anti women and human rights rules, extreme suppression and brainwashing systems, unstable political structure, etc. are all very nicely laid out and touched upon.
2- The emotional and cultural moments of the story are quite strong.
3- Overall, its raising awareness and drawing attention to the inhumane elements of the current regime, in a very blunt and subtle way at the same time. Which is great.

I too, thank Shirin Ebadi and especially Pari and her family for sharing their story... It must have been difficult to live through those harsh and bitter memories again to develop this book.

Honest and Timeless Advice

This book is different than Letters to Philip, so don't expect it to be its companion manual on "How to Treat a Man". It's more about how to be a truly great wife, how to love your role as a wife, and how to nurture a marriage that grows more rich and fulfilling every year. The advice has a feminine focus, but husbands would do well to read it too. It's a little dated by the old-fashioned roles of the bread winner and the home maker, but the core advice is so timeless that it transcends this social context. We can have non-traditional roles in the world but still celebrate and relish the wondrous intrinsic differences between men and women. The book is honest and straightforward about all facets of marriage, including sex. He is not shy about the importance of deep intimacy and mutual sexual fulfillment, or a wife's resplendent role as her husband's lover. I think the best summation of the advice is to talk, talk, talk, and listen, listen, listen. The moment you sweep something under the rug is the moment you start drifting apart, which is a slow and painful death for a marriage.

P.S. I'm a 50 year old lady engaged to the man of my dreams. This advice was most welcome.

The perfect wedding gift for any new bride

The father of a new bride sends frequent letters to his daughter giving council on how to keep her marriage strong.

My mother gave "Letters to Karen" to my new 18 year old bride as a wedding gift in 1978. A lot of people said we were too young and it wouldn't last. "Letters to Karen" (which I didn't read till sometime later) and "Letters to Philip" (which she gave to me at the same time) gave usthe storehouse of knowledge we needed to turn our marriage into a true romance and a partnership that is now 34 years strong, and counting, We are the proud parents of 5 productive and successful children who have given us, to date, 16 wonderful grandchildren. I would highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to maintain a strong relationship in their marriage.

The Book Every Bride Should Own

I'm a religious pluralist, and even though this book was written by a Christian pastor, I found it (and still find it) extremely helpful in married life. It's inspirational, informative (esp. about men and how their minds work), and full of great advice.

I own multiple copies of this book. Why? My father gave me this book when I left home at 18. I will do the same for each of my daughters. It might be the greatest advice my father ever gave me, and I want to pass that on to the next generation.

The only people I think it might offend are narrow-minded feminists. People who don't want to recognize that men and women are not just anatomically different, but different in how their minds work, how they process information. If you're not able to see the DIFFERENCES between yourself and your spouse, then you definitely don't want this book.

The concept of uBuntu has a definite place within law.
Desmond Tutu said of uBuntu:

One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu - the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality - Ubuntu - you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity."

Ubuntu is a concept which:
1. is to be contrasted with vengeance;
2. dictates that a high value be placed on the life of a human being;
3. is inextricably linked to the values of and which places a high premium on dignity, compassion, humaneness and respect for humanity of another;
4. dictates a shift from confrontation to mediation and conciliation;
5. dictates good attitudes and shared concern;
6. favours the re-establishment of harmony in the relationship between parties and that such harmony should restore the dignity of the plaintiff without ruining the defendant;
7. favours restorative rather than retributive justice;

Terribly Organized

I ordered this book to learn project finance. The author is clearly knowledgeable but, for whatever reason, he decided to just randomly jump back and forth between corporate and project financial modeling techniques making it very difficult to focus on one or the other. That might not be terrible by itself but he compounds the problem by referencing comparative differences between Corporate and Project modeling so you are basically forced to read everything to follow along. I had wrongly assumed there would be a section focused soley on PF modeling and I could ignore the other parts. Under what circumstances you'd be trying to learn both at the same time, or compare the two methodologies, is lost on me but maybe that just means I'm not the target audience. Additionally, he seems to just ramble on over the 500+ pages with little flow or actionable practice. I'm shocked his editor let this go out this way.

I gave it 2-Stars instead of 1 because I could see this book being useful as a desk reference when already working on a model and attempting to solve a single issue, but as a guide for learning, I found it pretty useless. I will be returning it and searching for a more focused text.

This book goes on and on with just text. There is a website for related files but it is so messy and disorganized with a bunch of excel files which look like draft version. So it is impossible to figure out how you can perform what you read in the book. It seems the author has not bothered to prepare some clean excel files for his instructions in the book.

Mr. Edward Bodmer introduced many unique approaches and concepts to tackle complex modelling issues that usually seen in corporate and project finance models.

Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to advance modelling skills.
