Amazing. This may be the most powerful testament yet writtenabout the war in Bosnia. Gorazde was a "safe area" in easternBosnia, much like the ill-fated Srebrenica nearby. It was nearly -butnot quite- overrun by Serb forces, and Sacco's four visits to the townyielded up this amazing comic-style account of the war from thenarrow, pained perspective of a town under siege. The story fits withthe format so well because it's not a chronology (like Honig's`Srebrenica'), nor a political review of the disintegration ofYugoslavia, nor a journalist's travelogue. It's just a day-to-dayaccount -conversations with soldiers, teachers, teenage girls,refugees, with their friends and families- all the folks who madeup wartime Gorazde. They witnessed unspeakable brutalities, attackson civilians, burning of houses, murders, rapes, gratuitous violenceby wicked men. Cut off from the world they are bored, hungry for newsand diversion. Sacco details these scenes and their terrible effectson the otherwise normal people of a nondescript Balkan town. Theunforgettable man who made hours of home video of carnage and bodyparts, achieving almost sexual pleasure from watching it and screeningit for visitors; the girls in search of bluejeans and boyfriends; thesoldiers who just want to go back to the university. Sacco placesGorazde in its historical context by reviewing the broader war, eventsin Sarajevo and Srebrenica and Dayton. He points fingers, this is notan even-handed piece of jurisprudence, but a visit to one of the ringsof hell, whose inhabitants know precisely who is guilty for visitingthis carnage on innocents. Sacco's illustrations pack a punch. Readerswill by turns grow tense as a group walks all night in the snow forsupplies, as a handful of men hold off a Serb column supported bytanks. Grim and terribly depressing, but important and well told

First, the bad news: "Safe Area Goradze" is bleak, depressing and unrelentingly sad. It is the true tale of the horrible suffering of the Muslim population of the ever-so-ironically designated "Safe Area" of Goradze, a city in the former country of Yugoslavia during that nation's recent civil war and breakup. The combination of the author's drawings and prose work together to tell the gruesome story of a real life hell on Earth in brutal, unflinching, unblinking detail. It's the graphic novel equivalent of "Schindler's List". If you buy this book, steel yourself. It's not an easy read.

Nevertheless, I think Joe Sacco is a genius who is to be commended for telling a story that cries out to be told. I'm sure his editors warned him that this story was not one that would be a big seller. The arcane politics of the former Yugoslavia, which Sacco does a masterful job of explaining, don't interest many people. And the subject matter is depressing and gruesome in the extreme. Nevertheless, he wrote and illustrated the graphic novel, and Fantagraphics Books is to be applauded for publishing it. Hopefully, this work will serve as the historical record of the awful torments inflicted upon human beings in a particular time and place, leaving wounds physical and psychic that will take generations to heal.

The genocide of Muslims by Christians in the 1990s

I just finished reading this brilliant work. I was in Eastern Europe in 1991-1993 and saw the refugees coming out of Bosnia. I followed the story as close as I could, even visting a refugee camp. But Sacco's illustrations put me on the ground in the supposed safe zones. The brutality of the supposedly Christian Serbs to Muslim Bosnians is so overwheliming it makes any beheadings in Iraq look like a birthday party in comparison.

The book also does a nice job giving the history of the war, including the role Clinton played, for those who don't remember the 1990s. Please rread this book. You can do it in a day.

A pretty surface story

Writing very cliche-ridden. But the author's a doctor not a writer. Yet writing does matter. Somehow it all had the feeling of a Hallmark card about dementia. Great writing conveys experience in a way that not only deepens our understanding, but also shocks us with revealing a truth that has been hidden or seemingly impossible to label. Given the subject matter, dementia, loss of self before death, loss of freedom, loss of a loved one's soul while their body is still before us, I felt this book skimmed along a sunny surface, ignoring the darkness below. Think one could get the same amount of insight this book provides by watching one of those 5 min "on the road" segments on the evening news.

As for Oscar; I kind of wondered if someone had objectively recorded every minute of the cat's activity, would there not have been just as much time with patients who didn't die? Perhaps that time just wasn't noticed or commented on because it wasn't part of the charming story. And even if the cat spent more time in the rooms of dying patients, there are a lot of more rational explanations other than the anthropomorphic one that the cat was "comforting" humans. But it makes a pretty, shallow story.

Helpful and compassionate

I have a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease.

I have read many clinical books on the disease in this past year. It's a lot to take in when this diagnosis is made. This person whom I've loved, cared about and who has been an important part of my life, is fading away. It can be a helpless feeling.

Dr. Dosa, takes a unique approach to his description of both disease and the impact on family and caregivers alike. This was written in the early part of his career and shares his feelings and thoughts on patient care in the skilled nursing facility where he practices.

This candid book is told in clinical anecdotes, as well as the story of Oscar, the cat.

This is a far gentler approach than many of the AD books I've read. It's very real, yet passionate about treating patients with dignity and respect. These last two get more difficult as the disease progresses.

Animals have a real soothing effect on AD patients. My little Maltese has the ability to sense who, in a room of ten people, needs her most. She will then cuddle up to them. I've seen how well it calms my own loved one with AD. I guess Charlie Brown was right...happiness IS a warm puppy.

This book handles the concept of skilled nursing facility as a place for a loved one with A.D. Certainly, we've come a long way in our nursing care for patients in the last stages of their lives.

Dr. Dosa also mentions skilled nursing at home. Having researched this option for my loved one, I know that the time to look into it is BEFORE a fall or illness that substantially weakens a loved one.

How do you find the right skilled nursing facility or home care? Ask your family doctor or primary care practitioner. They are required to see their patients on a regular basis. Our own family doctor recommended the service I plan to use for my loved one. He used the same for his own mother.

One last thought...there is a story of a woman who had a very close relationship with her loved one. Her approach is similar to what I've embraced. She saw her time with her loved one as a gift. Time IS a precious commodity. As hour after hour tumbles into days, months and years, we remember the people in our lives, not the things.

Learning about Oscar and taking care of family with Alzheimer's

A very nice book about an amazing cat. The author is a gerontologist who heard d about the unusual activities of one of the home's cats whenever someone was about to die. He questioned a number of the family members who, like Oscar the cat, were present at the death of their loved ones, or who were unable to be there but were happy to know that Oscar was there, keeping watch over their loved ones until the coroner left. During his investigation of the cat, the doctor learned a great deal about how people learn to care for their loved ones and how they cope with the emotional losses, and the physical losses as well. As an adult with a mother with Alzheimer's, the book was helpful, heart breaking at times, and entertaining. And, yes, at the end, I also prefer the cat, not the ICU.

If your interested in the "LAW"

I didn't buy this book for me, but for my son, as he was showing an interest in Law of some kind. When I looked through all that there was on Amazon, it was like WOW, where do I start? At the beginning of course. I figured he needed to know where we got our rules and laws in the United States. This book sounded ok. I was first worried it being to much for him to understand right off, but such was not the case. He said it was perfect! A friend of his is taking college courses in law for being a "Paralegal", and he wishes that he had that book to start off with. He told my son, that he wanted to read it as soon as my son was finished. The friend also told my son, that he wished that he started with something like this book. So I guess I made the right choice!

Superb history - if you can read it

This is, in my opinion, the best single volume history of American law (I'm a graduate of Harvard Law School and have taught law at schools in the US and abroad). But the print is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it. It should be in two or even three volumes, but of course it would then be much more expensive. So if you have keen eyesight, or a good magnifying glass, this is a great book.

I liked reading this book because it described how buddies live in the wild. I also read another similar book by a different author and it was good to compare them to see where they agreed and disagreed. Both books were helpful and inexpensive on my Kindle

Informative for new parakeet owner

Just purchased 2 baby girls last week for my little girls birthday. They are very sweet birds and already allow us to touch them and one put her foot on my finger and I want to make sure they are happy and healthy. I had no idea a mirror could be a bad idea when bonding with them. My girls are obsessed with their reflection so it adds up. I also didn't know they needed grit and none of the pet stores or websites I've visited mentioned it was needed. Glad I read the book.

I love this book it informed me SO much it taught me how to clip my buddies wings breed take and train and so much more I highly recommend this book I have to little cuties a girl Sukiee and a boy Cookie and I learned so much today and my sukiee is a tough one so I'm gonna do what the book said for taming the birds THANK YOU SO MUCH AMAZON
