Written for therapists, Co-Creating Change shows what to do to help "stuck" patients (those who resist the therapy process) let go of their resistance and self-defeating behaviors and willingly co-create a relationship for change instead. Co-Creating Change includes clinical vignettes that illustrate hundreds of therapeutic impasses taken from actual sessions, showing how to understand patients and how to intervene effectively. The book provides clear, systematic steps for assessing patients' needs and intervening to develop an effective relationship for change. Co-Creating Change presents an integrative theory that uses elements of behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, emotion-focused therapy, psychoanalysis, and mindfulness. This empirically validated treatment is effective with a wide range of patients.

A must-read resource for students of psychotherapy!
By Maury
It is with great pleasure that I recommend Jon Frederickson's new book to fellow students of psychotherapy. As a graduate student in clinical psychology I have read many books on psychotherapeutic technique over the past few years, and I must say that Jon's is the most clear, useful, and accessible that I have yet encountered. This is especially impressive because the book synthesizes literature from so many disciplines. All schools of psychoanalysis are represented, as are somatic-experiencing, emotion-focused, mindfulness, paradoxical, and cognitive-behavioral models, so therapists from many backgrounds will have a frame of reference from which to approach the model that Jon presents. This is all integrated with Jon's refined understanding of affective neuroscience and philosophy, plus his extensive clinical experience. Jon is concise in his definitions and descriptions of clinical phenomena in ways that many of our most celebrated psychodynamic writers are not. In annotated transcripts he provides integrative interventions for hundreds of clinical situations across the spectrum of psychoneurosis and fragility, and also elaborates on the ethos and moment-to-moment diagnostic awareness that guides them. Regulating anxiety, addressing defenses, and exploring feelings--the book will help you sharpen all these essential psychotherapy skills. Jon demonstrates a balance of respect and challenge for the patient that facilitates the development of a healing relationship, oriented towards security, deep experience of core emotions, and achievement of shared goals. I know that I have become more skillful and knowledgeable while reading the book, and my clinical work has improved. I have had the opportunity to study with Jon here in Washington, DC (also highly recommended!!!), and I am so grateful to have his expertise and relentless compassion distilled in a single volume. This is one that I will reference and re-read throughout my career, and that I will always recommend to colleagues and students. Enjoy!

Master Supervisor in a Textbook.... Priceless!
By Allan Gold
As a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and more recently "mindfulness" and "somatic" psychotherapist, and as a teacher of psychotherapists at the professional and graduate level for three decades, I whole heartedly recommend Jon Frederickson's book, Co-Creating Change: Effective Dynamic Therapy Techniques, as the best single book I have read for learning psychotherapy over my long career.
Frederickson, who calls himself in his previous book, an "integrative psychotherapist" has distilled decades of his own experience as a teacher and practitioner to create a refreshing and bold approach to teaching psychotherapy in this book that is full of practical and theoretical wisdom. It is a tour de force which integrates psychoanalytic concepts, both Freudian and Object Relations, with up to date information from neuroscience, behaviorism, cognitive science, infant research, and attachment theory.. He has read widely and integrated a breadth of current models of psychotherapy including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, somatic psychotherapy, and Gestalt and mindfulness techniques.
The book is effective from its first chapters on anxiety and creating a therapeutic alliance, helpful to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. The book moves forward systematically in its nearly 500 pages of text through complex and subtle problems involving working very skillfully with defenses, transferences, character resistances, and superego pathology, addressing specifically with clear examples of how to work with patients, including, in my experience, patients previously unapproachable in traditional psychotherapy. The book has much to teach advanced practitioners and teachers of psychotherapy as well.
Frederickson's work stems from pioneering works of Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, and Habib Davenloo, that integrate classical psychoanalytic ideas with active techniques that efficiently and methodically engage and resolve resistance. Frederickson also documents current ongoing evidence based research by Allan Abbass in Canada and others internationally, proving that treatment of complex personality based problems can be resolved in months to a year with most cases using techniques presented in this book. This is true even when traditional approaches have taken much longer and have often been less effective.
Central to the method is the client's seeing moment to moment the ways that he or she distorts and cuts off experience of unconscious defenses, anxiety, emotions, and personality patterns. The therapist's skills in promoting awareness and determination for change then open the possibility for the client to interrupt "and take a stand against" these mental actions, to see what lies just beyond. This is done in a way that is titrated, safe, supported, and transformational. The book copiously illustrates powerful yet brief sequences of interaction that address and resolve the ubiquitous projections of these more complex, resistant, or fragile patients, and their evasions of motivation and responsibility, that often derail therapy.
Frederickson includes 25 pages of references that span the entire literature of psychoanalysis, the various psychotherapies, attachment theory, somatic psychotherapy, neurobiology, spirituality, and philosophy. He has distilled these in approachable language throughout the text, judiciously and unobtrusively, so that the reader can follow the theoretical and practical parts of the text with relative ease. The reference list includes internet resources as well as classic papers and texts for richer exploration.
As a teacher of psychotherapists for over 30 years, I have found that what most helps people to learn, and what learners most ask for, is supervision with mentors who model and show their own work. Frederickson's very finely attuned transcripts not only show in detail what he says to the client, but why he says what he says, as he articulates the unfolding of the clinical vignettes. These succinctly illuminate masterful ways to resolve the myriads of situations that can arise. Frederickson demonstrates expanding the therapeutic alliance, resolving resistances, and mobilizing the forces of emotion toward transformative changes. In this respect the book reminds me of some the best writing in psychotherapy by Michael Franz Basch, Mardi Horwitz, Leigh McCullough, and Patricia Coughlin (Frederickson's mentor). He masterfully weaves the models that he has described into the transcripts themselves as though teaching from a videotape, pausing frequently to explain his actions and the effect on the client's process as it unfolds.
The book is also a systematic and comprehensive modeling of the overall therapeutic process, geared to conducting psychotherapy at a pace and level most efficient for the strengths and difficulties of the particular client. One learns how to assess the level of difficulty and capacity in the individual through a structured process that moves through inquiry to diagnosis, an ongoing process that continues as an ongoing assessment through the layers of the unfolding treatment. The structure of the book helps the reader/practitioner, learn how to use himself or herself through words and therapeutic actions to assess at any given moment whether the client is resisting or engaging with the therapeutic process. All of us resist knowing our own emotions internally and but also regulate the level of intimacy with others by hiding our emotions from ourselves and each other. In therapy, clients do this even more intensively as the therapist attempts an inquiry into the client's problems, and tries to establish a consensus about and alliance for resolution of the client's internal conflicts. Effective psychotherapeutic interaction opens up the innate capacities in the client to feel and regulate anxiety, feel and regulate emotions, see and interrupt previously unconscious defenses, see and interrupt patterns of sabotage through self punishment (superego pathology) or identification with and re-enactment in the therapy of what was done to the client (character resistance). As the reader understands these mechanisms, he or she learns to assess and move through the complex layering of person's self created suffering, in an increasingly coherent investigative process. This reminds me of the complex dialectic of trial interventions leading to diagnosis and resolution in medical diseases. At each step of the way, throughout the book, Frederickson discusses the elements of whatever internal problem must be addressed at any given moment. He shows how these elements manifest, how to invite the client to see, dis-identify, track, see the cost, develop the will to take a stand, and develop the courage to persist in the face of pain and fear repeatedly through the stages of the therapeutic work.
The words of the Great Physician, Sir William Osler come to mind as I read and reread Frederickson's book. To paraphrase: "learning medicine on the wards without good textbooks is like going to sea without maps, but reading without seeing a diversity of patients is like not going to sea at all." Frederickson's book, like no other I have read, combines both a cohesive, very clear synthesis of the best past and current thinking about psychodynamics with a grand tour of lively examples to show us what to do and how to do integrative psychotherapy giving us maps, and flow charts, and lively detailed examples of how to do the work. I recommend this book without reservation.

Co-Creating Change should be in every psychotherapist's bookshelf.
By Monica Stone
If I had been able to buy Co-Creating Change when I first got licensed as a therapist, or better yet when I was studying in school, I would have enjoyed many more years of clarity about what I was doing and why. I would have known more about how to truly effect deep psychological healing in many of my clients.

The Author, Jon Frederickson, is a very clear thinker and he lays out the psychodynamic model he uses transparently and simply in this book. What's more, you and your client/patient share the same language and can really look at the defenses that are creating his/her suffering. The therapeutic work is experiential in the consulting room. Change happens in the "now" but the insights that can be realized through the model laid out in this book are life changing.

Jon reads all the literature on neuroscience and that research is laid down in this book (with copious references) to make the method more understandable. Buy this book! You won't be sorry and neither will your clients. My goal is to, as Jon says, "make every statement I make invite the patient to co-create a relationship for change with me."

Stumbling on Happiness, by Daniel Gilbert

• Why are lovers quicker to forgive their partners for infidelity than for leaving dirty dishes in the sink?• Why will sighted people pay more to avoid going blind than blind people will pay to regain their sight? • Why do dining companions insist on ordering different meals instead of getting what they really want? • Why do pigeons seem to have such excellent aim; why can’t we remember one song while listening to another; and why does the line at the grocery store always slow down the moment we join it?In this brilliant, witty, and accessible book, renowned Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert describes the foibles of imagination and illusions of foresight that cause each of us to misconceive our tomorrows and misestimate our satisfactions. Vividly bringing to life the latest scientific research in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, and behavioral economics, Gilbert reveals what scientists have discovered about the uniquely human ability to imagine the future, and about our capacity to predict how much we will like it when we get there. With penetrating insight and sparkling prose, Gilbert explains why we seem to know so little about the hearts and minds of the people we are about to become.

Amazon.com Review
Do you know what makes you happy? Daniel Gilbert would bet that you think you do, but you are most likely wrong. In his witty and engaging new book, Harvard professor Gilbert reveals his take on how our minds work, and how the limitations of our imaginations may be getting in the way of our ability to know what happiness is. Sound quirky and interesting? It is! But just to be sure, we asked bestselling author (and master of the quirky and interesting) Malcolm Gladwell to read Stumbling on Happiness, and give us his take. Check out his review below. --Daphne Durham

Guest Reviewer: Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell is the author of bestselling books Blink and The Tipping Point, and is a staff writer for The New Yorker.

Several years ago, on a flight from New York to California, I had the good fortune to sit next to a psychologist named Dan Gilbert. He had a shiny bald head, an irrepressible good humor, and we talked (or, more accurately, he talked) from at least the Hudson to the Rockies--and I was completely charmed. He had the wonderful quality many academics have--which is that he was interested in the kinds of questions that all of us care about but never have the time or opportunity to explore. He had also had a quality that is rare among academics. He had the ability to translate his work for people who were outside his world.

Now Gilbert has written a book about his psychological research. It is called Stumbling on Happiness, and reading it reminded me of that plane ride long ago. It is a delight to read. Gilbert is charming and funny and has a rare gift for making very complicated ideas come alive.

Stumbling on Happiness is a book about a very simple but powerful idea. What distinguishes us as human beings from other animals is our ability to predict the future--or rather, our interest in predicting the future. We spend a great deal of our waking life imagining what it would be like to be this way or that way, or to do this or that, or taste or buy or experience some state or feeling or thing. We do that for good reasons: it is what allows us to shape our life. And it is by trying to exert some control over our futures that we attempt to be happy. But by any objective measure, we are really bad at that predictive function. We're terrible at knowing how we will feel a day or a month or year from now, and even worse at knowing what will and will not bring us that cherished happiness. Gilbert sets out to figure what that's so: why we are so terrible at something that would seem to be so extraordinarily important?

In making his case, Gilbert walks us through a series of fascinating--and in some ways troubling--facts about the way our minds work. In particular, Gilbert is interested in delineating the shortcomings of imagination. We're far too accepting of the conclusions of our imaginations. Our imaginations aren't particularly imaginative. Our imaginations are really bad at telling us how we will think when the future finally comes. And our personal experiences aren't nearly as good at correcting these errors as we might think.

I suppose that I really should go on at this point, and talk in more detail about what Gilbert means by that--and how his argument unfolds. But I feel like that might ruin the experience of reading Stumbling on Happiness. This is a psychological detective story about one of the great mysteries of our lives. If you have even the slightest curiosity about the human condition, you ought to read it. Trust me. --Malcolm Gladwell

From Publishers Weekly
Not offering a self-help book, but instead mounting a scientific explanation of the limitations of the human imagination and how it steers us wrong in our search for happiness, Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard, draws on psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy and behavioral economics to argue that, just as we err in remembering the past, so we err in imagining the future. "Our desire to control is so powerful, and the feeling of being in control so rewarding, that people often act as though they can control the uncontrollable," Gilbert writes, as he reveals how ill-equipped we are to properly preview the future, let alone control it. Unfortunately, he claims, neither personal experience nor cultural wisdom compensates for imagination's shortcomings. In concluding chapters, he discusses the transmission of inaccurate beliefs from one person's mind to another, providing salient examples of universal assumptions about human happiness such as the joys of money and of having children. He concludes with the provocative recommendation that, rather than imagination, we should rely on others as surrogates for our future experience. Gilbert's playful tone and use of commonplace examples render a potentially academic topic accessible and educational, even if his approach is at times overly prescriptive. 150,000 announced first printing.(May)

From Booklist
Anticipating the future, psychologist Gilbert suggests, is the brain's most important function, and the notion of later, a powerful idea. But why not live in the here and now, as many self-help gurus urge? Because, Gilbert says, thinking about the future can be pleasurable; for instance, daydreaming tends to be about success and achievement "rather than fumbling or failing." Citing the research of scientists and philosophers through the ages and incorporating facts and theories from psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, and behavioral economics, Gilbert discusses the science of happiness, the shortcomings of imagination as well as the illusions of foresight. And far from being a dry tome, the book is a sly, irresistible romp down, or through, memory lane--past, present, and future. It is not only wildly entertaining but also hilarious (if David Sedaris were a psychologist, he very well might write like this) and yet full of startling insight, imaginative conclusions, and even bits of wisdom. Technical but written in an accessible, conversational style. Highly worthwhile!
By Suz deMello
A fascinating look at why we do what we do. So good that I checked it out of the library twice for my Kindle, made so many highlights that while I was transcribing them I thought--I should just buy this book because it was so excellent.

The main thesis is that we fail to act in ways that make us happy because we misremember the past and misperceive the present, which makes it almost impossible to correctly figure out what will make us happy in the future.

The author does advise checking out others' reactions to the same stimuli, and discarding the notion that each of us is unique.

I would also imagine that journaling daily, and then rereading would be helpful.

Superbly Insightful (Well Beyond My Expectations)
By Camber
Based on this book's title and a cursory glance at some reviews, I figured that this is probably just another book on happiness, but I decided to read it anyway since the ratings are generally pretty good, credible people have endorsed it, and the topic is important. I'm pleased to report that the book far exceeded my expectations and represents an important and original contribution to this genre. Despite having read quite a few books over the years, including several good ones on happiness, I learned a lot of new and useful things from this book.

In fact, this book is so packed with insights that I'll need to carefully go through it again (which I look forward to). Some readers may feel that the book goes into too many topics which are tangential to the main argument, but I personally very much appreciated the way Gilbert builds his case systematically and thoroughly, providing us with a wide array of intellectual fringe benefits in the process. Indeed, while the focus of the book is on happiness, the scope of the book is actually much broader than just happiness.

The content of the book is mostly drawn from experimental psychology (the good kind), and Gilbert describes many experiments in just the right amount of detail. I sometimes felt that he neglected plausible alternative interpretations of the experimental results, but I see this as a relatively minor issue. The earlier parts of the book also mixed in some Western philosophy, which I thought was a nice touch. And the many quotes from Shakespeare were also apropo since, after all, Shakespeare just about single-handedly encapsulated the full spectrum of human experience and behavior into his body of work!

Given the book's rich content, it's hard to summarize this book, but I would say that the (greatly oversimplified) main idea is that both our memory and imagination are inherently faulty, which often causes us to choose suboptimally when it comes to decisions which affect our future happiness. We can partly get around that problem by querying people who are currently having the experience we're considering having, but that approach doesn't always work, plus we're inherently resistant to taking that approach anyway. However, again, this is just an oversimplification, and you really need to read this book in its entirety.

Regarding Gilbert's writing style, I think he's quite clear and easy to follow, and he also employs humor throughout the book. To be honest, I initially found his humor superfluous and a bit annoying, but I gradually came to appreciate it, since it lightens the book's atmosphere and thereby helps to sustain the reader's stamina.

Overall, this is a superb book and I highly recommend it if you want to be happier, or even if you're just interested in what makes people tick. Five stars don't even begin to do justice to this book.

Lord Rochester's Monkey: Being the Life of John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester, by Graham Greene

"Lord Rochester's Monkey" was written between 1931 and 1934 and, because of the reputation of its subject, the notorious Restoration libertine and poet, the book failed to find a publisher. Rochester was the most prominent of rakes. He was also a fine lyrical and satirical poet whose work, in Greene's opinion, has been greatly underestimated, being overshadowed by his life of lechery and drunkenness, wild pranks and practical jokes. At court, Charles II suffered but respected Rochester's coruscating satires, joined in his erotic escapades and rewarded him with distinctions. Yet the last thirteen years of his life were "clouded by the fumes of drink" and literary quarrels. On his deathbed in 1680 - he was only 33 - he called for Dr Burnet and repented. His friend Etheridge wrote of him: "I know he is a devil, but had something of the angel yet undefac'd in him".

The book arrived in good condition, and, considering how few copies may have been made, it is a rare gift to encounter a biography written by Graham Greene. I am delighted to have this book in my collection.

Exquisitely Executed Literary Biography
By Doug Anderson
In taking on the Rochester legend Greene has set himself a formidable task because Rochester exists primarily by virtue of his very unvirtuous reputation. At the time Greene set about researching Rochester his lyrics were virtually unread by all but Rochester and Restoration scholars because no general collection (let alone a scholarly edition) of his works existed in the 1930's. His poems were not readily available to the public and even students and scholars had to search the archives to find them (at Oxford his verses were kept in a special file that scholars had to ask for). And at the time Greene is writing his biography no one really wants anything to do with it; thus it went unpublished for forty years.

This is not the first Rochester biography I have read. I've also read James William Johnson's A PROFANE WIT: The Life of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester (2004). But each biographer, though dealing with the same bundle of anecdotes, letters, and texts really puts those things together in their own way. Each biographer chooses which episodes to stress and exactly how to stress them. Facts alone really do not tell us that much. A biography is really a chance for a scholar, or novelist in this case, to offer their version of a famous, or infamous, life. Johnson's biography has the benefit of having been written in a time when a considerable amount of research has been done on the life and writings of Rochester and so his own works builds upon that. Greene, however, is really starting from scratch and building from a very scant pile of Rochester research. As a result Johnsons life of Rochester is heavy on dates and facts (the research is impressive and exaustive) while Graham Green's life of Rochester is more intuitive. Johnson is the adamant and assiduous scholar and Greene the literary gentleman. Nonetheless Johnson does leave shcolarship behind at times when he ventures into the psychoanalytic which the author admits is highly speculative. This is where we find the advantage of Greene. Greene wrote his biography before the dogmas of Freud were readily accepted as fact. Thus with Greene you do not get the psychobabble, rather you get a very classic no-frills literary portrait. After reading both I find I prefer the Greene version of Rochester's life.

Graham Greene offers a conflicted Rochester: a man that is in many ways both a product of his age and one of his age's greatest critics. Perhaps the most interesting conflict within the age and within Rochester himself was the one between Hobbist rationalism (which led to much of the cynicism in the poetry and drama of the time) and a continued interest in religion. Greene's Rochester is a man within whom the religious and philosophical battles of the day rage. And ultimately the victory goes to religion (though it might be more accurate to say that Rochester fought the battle to a draw). Rochester's death bed conversion is well known but what has not been examined is how thoroughly religious sentiment and language saturates even his most bawdy and cynical lyrics. Greene does an excellent job of showing that the church never really left Rochester and that rationalism never wholly replaced the religious mysticism that played a part in his conception of the universe his entire life. Neither regime of knowledge/belief really dominated, rather each system competed with the other in an unresolved and creative tension. The most telling anecdote is of Rochester's pact with a fellow soldier in the heat of a naval battle: Rochester and his fellow soldier had premonitions of death before the naval battle was to begin and so they promised each other that if either of them should die they would appear to the other after death. The other soldier did die within a few feet of him and Rochester apparently was haunted by this his entire life. Knowledge of the horror of battle that he experienced firsthand always made it difficult for Rochester to accept that there was any kind of divinity looking out for men. Rochester would later regret the part that his actions and his poetry had in leading others astray and he always admired moral men but his own beliefs wavered even at the end.

Greene's own war time experience, his battles with cynicism and liquor, his literary sensibility (he is espcially good at picking out choice quotes from Rochester's poetry to illustrate states of mind and moods), and his Catholicism make him an especially qualified biographer.

The full-color paintings, illustrations, maps and other period paraphenalia make this an especially attractive volume to own.

All of the usual Restoration suspects are here: Charles II, Lady Castelmaine, Nell Gwynn, Elizabeth Barry (Greene devotes quite a bit of space to an analysis of the love letters Rochester wrote to Barry), Etherege and other rakehells....as well as the long list of Rochester's enemies: including Dryden and Mulgrave...

What was perhaps most surprising to me was the fact that the Rochester that most people know( the one that is always drunk, always spinning new profane and seditious lyrics, and always after a new lady) is simply one of Rochester's many personas. This is a legend that Rochester's own friends helped create and perpetuate, but this is not the only Rochester that Greene is interested in. In fact Greene is much more interested in revealing that even though Rochester seems to have embodied the age more than any other figure, he also despised the age more than anyone. And it is the unresolvedness of his divided vision that drives Rochester to antagonisms with others and that compels him to write. It is the poet not the riotous court fool that fascinates Greene the most.

Greene is thus presenting us with a Rochester that has perhaps unfairly been labeled a profane wit. Rochester could play the profane wit when in his cups better than anyone else but Rochester played many roles, and "profane wit" is only one masque that this myriad voiced personality wore. Greene's immensely well written and pleasurable biography reads not like a dry scholarly exercise for it is not an endless iteration of inane facts and dates. Nor does Greene try to wow you with his own detective work (the pitfall of many a literary biography), rather this reads like the work of a gentleman scholar, albeit one more sensitive and receptive to literary exploration than to scandalous misdeed, and as a result he stresses the former over the latter.

Other Rochester biographies have the advantage of being written by experts in this literary period, but this kind of expertise is often dry and lacks imaginative spark. As thorough as Johnson's biography is I found it crowded with too many dates and too much peripheral information about relatives and family politics. Greene is not only a competent researcher but also a literary man with a literary sensibility and genius of his own and this allows Greene the kind of insights the fact checkers and experts often miss. Greene may have far fewer original sources at his disposal than Johnson did but I much prefer and value Greene's literary virtues (and intuition) over Johnson's merely academic virtues.

One of the best literary biographies I've encountered.

The Libertine
By giocasa
My only knowledge of John Wilmot was limited to the movie the Libertine, so I went to the library in search of some kind, actually any kind of materials they had on Wilmot. My search ended with this book being the only one to be had in the whole library system. After reading the book I really did not think that I know anymore about much about lord Rochester, than before. The main things that weren't in the movie were, that He had served in the war in naval battles, and seemed to do so bravely ,and that He also was assigned, to serve the king in his chambers,at 1000 pounds a year , wow , what a sum that must have been then. Wilmot was quite a spendthrift to get through that and more, He ran up lots of credit ,and seemed to be always broke. Being there is such little source materials accessible then when the book was written. I wonder why the fellow has been both demon and or glorified period. I am sure there is much more to Wilmot than any book or any movie can portray. He was a man of His times to be sure, with regular doses of syphilis, dueling, mercury baths, and mercenary actresses, earning their bread on the boards, as well as in their beds. I am thankful for this well written biography that has given Me new insights into another of the world famous libertines almost lost to history.

The Annals of Imperial Rome (Penguin Classics), by Tacitus

His last work, regarded by many as the greatest work of contemporary scholarship, Tacitus' The Annals of Imperial Rome recount with depth and insight the history of the Roman Empire during the first century A.D. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with an introduction by Michael Grant. Tacitus' Annals of Imperial Rome recount the major historical events from the years shortly before the death of Augustus up to the death of Nero in AD 68. With clarity and vivid intensity he describes the reign of terror under the corrupt Tiberius, the great fire of Rome during the time of Nero, and the wars, poisonings, scandals, conspiracies and murders that were part of imperial life. Despite his claim that the Annals were written objectively, Tacitus' account is sharply critical of the emperors' excesses and fearful for the future of Imperial Rome, while also filled with a longing for its past glories.

Michael Grant's translation vividly captures the emotional patriotism of Tacitus' moral tone, offset by a lucid understanding that Rome is doomed, and conveys with cinematic vigour the lives of the great Emperors who laid the foundations of modern Europe.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Gossip and Scandals of Ancient Rome
By Frances Haas
This book is a masterpiece. It begins with a battle in what is now Germany. The description of the rugged Roman Legions is shocking and informative. There were often insurrections for more pay. These were usually put down harshly, a method Tacitus agrees will help keep order. In describing the city of Rome and its upper class citizens, I was amazed at the backbiting, lies, executions, and barbarous behavior shown by almost everyone. It is a bitter book and shows how power corrupts absolutely. I admit to having to read it in small doses for the terrain covered is very bleak.

Not the Best
By Kindle Customer
It is interesting till the translator tries to update the organization of the Roman army. It is distracting in that that organization was different from current armies and should be treated as such. The job of translators is to render the subject as it was written and not to change it as the see fit.

An Oldie but a very Good one!!!
By Phillip L. Keup
Tacitus is without doubt one of my favorite historians on any subject matter. this translation is very very good. I Highly recommend it from all angles. if you want to start toread a work of the great ancient historians i would start with this one. there is a lot hee but he delves deep into veryday life and you feel it from a man who is still living it. A patriot who is not affraid to show it but also not woried to point out what went wrong and what should be fixed. Human to the core.

Merveilleuse! C'est un Grand Livre! (You'll love it!)
By LINDSEY PHILPOTT
As a reader of French, you will find much of value in the manner of translation, the phrasing and information available throughout this tome. As a reader of knots you will find this book highly enlightening for your bookshelf, in that the knot-tying information gives you many hints to the origins of some knotting terms. Ashley's book is filled with so many anecdotes about knotting that this really becomes a history book, an instruction book, and now a French language book all rolled into one. Try it - I did, and found it absolutely fascinating! Bonne chance!
