Excellent!

Just finished this book and loved it! I'm 45, and while I've been a Star Wars fan since the original movie came out in 1974, I've never read any of the books...mostly because I didn't read much of anything there for years. Oh, I did read Splinter of the Mind's eye in Jr. High, I guess. Anyway, when I heard the next trilogy of movies was coming out, I decided I should read some of the "after the movies" stuff. I didn't know where to start, but many folks seemed to like Timothy Zahn, so I started with the Thrawn Trilogy and loved it, so the Hand of Thrawn was a logical next step.

I have really enjoyed all these books. Zahn is a very good writer and I was very entertained by both of these series. They read quite easily and he has a nice balance between action and character development and includes a nice sense of descriptiveness without being too detailed. I just checked out Survivor's Quest from the library and plan to read the rest of Zahn's Star Wars novels, then we'll see where I go from there!

I'm hooked on the Star Wars Universe again...

No one was more excited than me when "Heir to the Empire" was published. A fan of the movie trilogy since I saw my first Star Destroyer, I snatched up all of the novels...at first. Zahn's first trilogy was exciting and, most of all, fun -- just like the movies. But as I read the other novels, my enjoyment began to fade. Luke opening up a Jedi Academy and keeping it open even after he discovers a powerful Dark Side influence?! Lando Calrissan -- galactic playboy searching for a rich wife?! An Imperial Grand Admiral with no tactical sense whatsoever who becomes soft and mushy when reunited with her lost love? Luke falling in love with a sentient computer who allows a woman to commit suicide so she can take over her body?! Puhleeze. I couldn't get away from the books fast enough. Then I picked up "Visions of the Future." WOW! Now I'm a fan again. And to make it even better, Zahn fixes nearly all the other authors' mistakes. It makes SENSE for Luke to have been under a Dark Side influence, which allowed him to make so many boneheaded decisions. And for him to overuse the Force to the extent that he no longer feels its subtle guidance. Finally Han has a job other than Mr. Organa Solo; and Leia is moved away from the tedious political machinations she is subject to as Head of State and becomes a councilor, a position that allows her to move around and is also more in keeping with her Jedi status. And as a big Mara Jade fan...I'm VERY happy. This has been foreshadowed since "Heir;" I thought the progression of their relationship was handled extremely well. If you notice, Mara and Luke are still wary of each other in the beginning, but as they share their innermost feelings and forgive each other for supposed past transgressions the relationship deepens. Mara is probably one of the most loyal characters in this universe; it makes perfect sense for her to stay away from Luke until she was sure that he understood the ramifications of his Force usage -- because once she gave her commitment she would be with him all the way, including if he fell to the Dark Side. She's been down that path before and didn't need to go there again...
Well, anyway, I'm hooked once more.
And for those of you wondering about the wedding, Dark Horse Comics has announced a limited series starting in November with the working title
SPOILER
The Marriage of Luke Skywalker. And yes, Mara is the co-star!

A Must-Read For All "Star Wars" Fans!

If you enjoyed Timothy Zahn's HEIR TO THE EMPIRE trilogy,you're in for a real treat with VISION OF THE FUTURE! This book is thebrilliant, exciting, astonishing conclusion to the story that was begun in SPECTER OF THE PAST. Tim Zahn is a masterful storyteller! He takes his multi-dimensional characters and his rich plots and subplots through many unexpected twists and turns before he finally weaves them all together in his stunning finish. The characterizations are excellent and on-target. The author has truly captured the essence of all of our engaging, beloved, resourceful old friends from that Galaxy Far, Far Away, and introduces us to some interesting and compelling new ones. The reader truly connects with these characters who are very REAL, as they face countless dangers and tremendous obstacles. The villains are intelligent, cunning, and surprising; worthy opponents for our favorite heroes and heroines. There is something for everyone in this novel: action, adventure, intrigue, mystery, sacrifice, friendship, humor, politics, heroics, shocking revelations, and valuable lessons learned, all wrapped together in the wonderful surprise package that is this book. VISION OF THE FUTURE is a novel that no "Star Wars" fan should miss! This was without a doubt, the best "Star Wars" book of all, and my personal favorite. I strongly encourage you to resist the powerful temptation to jump ahead or to take a peek at the ending when reading this book. Many things happen all at once at the end and there are some very startling developments. You will be confused and much of the impact will be lost if you give in to the overwhelming desire to read ahead. Trust me: If you read VISION OF THE FUTURE cover to cover without skipping forward, you'll be very glad that you did. Someone shared that advice with me, and I was very grateful that she did! Enjoy!

Suit coat pocket sized!

It is nice to have a ritual that can fit in my suit pocket. This contains all the major rites of the Roman Catholic Latin Rite and also many blessings as well. With a side by side English to Latin form, it allows the prayers to be said in either language.

This is very useful for visits to the sick in hospitals, or just a general travel ritual. I keep this handy on me for use in a pinch!

What about the graveside rite?

This is an excellent ritual, except for one flaw: the graveside rite is only in Latin. Everything else is Latin and English. Otherwise, everything from it's truly pocket-size to the traditional appearance is great.

This is a beautifully bound book. The leather and gilded edges are outstanding quality. I so appreciate the Latin text. Call me old fashioned, but I do miss the days when Latin was the language of the Church. Thank you, Jessica, for the nice handwritten note on the packing slip.

About the Author
Dr. Douglas Goodin, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UCSF Medical Center, is a neurologist and an internationally renowned expert in the treatment and research of multiple sclerosis.. He earned a bachelor of sciences degree in genetics and biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle; a master of sciences degree in molecular biology at Purdue University in Indiana; and a medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed a residency in neurology at UCSF where he joined the medical center staff in 1982. In addition to multiple sclerosis, Goodin's research interests include various forms of dementia. Goodin also is a professor of neurology at UCSF.

This new book provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes. Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way. The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course in statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided. For many students and researchers learning to use these methods, this one book may be all they need to conduct and interpret multipredictor regression analyses. The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. Nice coverage of important topics for biostatisticians

The authors say that they created this book to fit with a course they taught at UC San Francisco to medical students. The book is very sophisticated and a great reference source for practicing biostatisticians in industry or research. It surprises me a little that they find it effective for there non-technical audience. Although the topics are technical and many are advanced they do cover it in a conceptual way without heavy mathematics but still requiring some statistics classes as prerequisite.

Regression does not cover all the techniques of biostatistics but as the authors point out the four topics in the subtitle are among the most important. I know this from my many years of experience as a bisostatistician in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. They use many good practical examples useing many of the common variables studies in many clinical trials where physical exams are given to record blood pressure and other vital signs and chemistry labs are done to determine cholesterol levels and other things that can be factors in various diseases. Also glucose levels are very important to monitor for diabetes trials.

In addition to the standard topics general estimating equations and generalized linear models are covered and where appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. There is even a chapter on complex surveys a topic important when quality of life is an endpoint and survey instruments are used to measure it.

In the survival analysis chapter the Kaplan-Meier curves, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models are covered as expected but the authors go further to include extensions of the Cox model when the proportional hazards assumption fails. My only disappointment is that there is no coverage of actuarial life tables. At the medical device companies that I worked for it was common to get interval data on events rather than continuous data and then the Cutler-Ederer life table method is the analog for interval data to the Kaplan-Meier estimator for continuous data.

The book covers many topics but is concise as the authors claim. The authors provide a lot of examples that they work out using the statistical package Stata. The authors claim that Stata is the package of choice for biostatistics. This may be the case in academic settings but is certainly not the case in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is used almost exclusively. I think that it would have been better to show how to write the computer code for solving these problems both in SAS and Stata. To the authors credit Stat is a very good package for their purpose and they do at times mention SAS and SPSS which are the other two major statistical packages used in industry.

All in all this is a very good book that is worth its list price. I will use it as a reference. it also contains a very nice bibliography of 9 pages.

Regression Methods in Biostatistics is clearly a very well-organized book, covering topics from simple linear regression theory and methods, to the more complex survival analyses. The material is especially recommended for students who have just completed introductory biostatistics and statistical programming, and are looking for practical applications of their skills (of course, for those looking for more thorough practice, it is recommended that those individuals take more advanced biostatistics courses). Relevant examples are abundant throughout the chapters, and the authors are also very thoughtful in providing a website ([...]) where one is able to download the data (in all types of files) used in all the examples in the book, as well as for the practice problems. One drawback to this book, however, is the authors' reliance on only STATA to present the modeling examples; this is incredibly useful for primarily STATA users (the authors provide tips on STATA codes) but not particularly helpful for SAS users, for example (though it is certainly not a very huge learning barrier).

The purpose of this book is to tell the whole story of how the fashion business works, in sequential order from concept to consumer. The fashion business is a series of buying supplies, creating and developing a new product, and marketing the product. The fashion business includes all the processes involved with producing raw materials, apparel, and accessories and the retail stores that sell fashion merchandise to the public. It is important for executives in the fashion industry to know how all of these processes interrelate.

Fashion designers and merchandisers who work for manufacturers must work with textile producers to develop fabrics that they need for their apparel and accessories.
