About the Author
Simon Mills is the head of sustainable development for the City of London. He is a specialist in sustainable finance, climate change, environmental planning, management systems and policy development. He advises the Bridge House Trust on sustainable development issues and sits on the steering groups a number of pan London and national fora including; the London Climate Change Partnership, the Construction Industries Council Sustainable Development Committee and the London Accord Project Board. He is one of the architects of the London Principles of Sustainable Finance, which took him to the Johannesburg Earth Summit as part of the UK Delegation. Simon has worked in sustainable development for 10 years, prior to which he was involved in environmental research in Central America. He holds an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment and Masters in Public Administration.

Great book but think twice before you buy the Kindle version

I already own the first edition of this great book and decided to buy the Kindle version of the upgraded second edition instead of the printed version because I wanted to be able to use the search function of my Kindle DX and Kindle Mac App. Well, searching works fine but the superb monographs of the thirty or so herbs in this book are not included in the Toc. So if you want to quickly read up on the latest research on Eleuthero, for example, there is no way to find it, because it doesn't have an entry in the Toc. You either have to browse to it or use the search function, hoping you'll be able to quickly recognize the Eleuthero main monograph in the many search results. Neither method is fast and convenient. The index is hard to use to. It only has one entry in the Toc which takes you to the letter A. The letter A alone has 28 pages on my Kindle DX, so if you're looking for an entry under M you may be in for a few hundred clicks. I ended up with making highlight entries for each of the monographs. I use the search function for all other purposes. The indexes are as good as unusable.
In short: this is one of the best books on herbs, but the Kindle version is deeply flawed. It seems to me it's quite easy to correct the main flaws:
1. Add entries for each of the monographs to the TOC
2. Add the letters of the alphabet to the indexes in the TOC, so users can jump to M if they want to look up something under M.

Outstanding book, highly recommended

This herbal medicine book is by Kerry Bone, so what more is there to say?
I'm a naturopathic student in my final year. I wish I had such a book when I started the course... it has taken my knowledge and understanding of herbs to new heights.
When I was doing my clinicals, my supervisor always taught me to use "specifics", i.e., prescribe specific herbs for a particular condition, ex., hypericum for depression, withania and rhodiola for stress, crataeva for kidney stones, crataegus for cardiovascular problems like hypertension, thymus and inula for bronchitis, silybum for cirrhosis or other liver problems, etc.
This book is congruent with my clinical supervisor's herbal treatment approach and reasoning for using certain herbs. It was actually her that suggested I buy this book.
This book compliments another book: "Clinical Naturopathy: an evidenced-based guide to practice" by Jerome Sarris and Joh Wardle. They work well together in understanding what herbs (based on scientific research and clinical experience) are best for X condition.
This book has been a great investment into my education and learning of herbs. Highly recommended, especially for students or practitioners.

excellent textbook

Excellent textbook in our university's Masters of Science in Herbal Medicine program. Needed to buy three more copies. Kerry Bone's prominence and writing syle are put to good use.
