Excellent book for a mathematical physicist.

This book offers a unique (in my experience) mix of visually oriented motivation, mathematical clarity & rigor, and examples from classical physics. It is well organized and (relatively) easy to understand, and it has a wealth of good exercises, many with answers. My only wish is for a solutions book.

Away with the pretty graphics, excellent text

I bought this textbook for my own interest when I was in high school, around the time I was becoming that guy who would eventually spend his graduation money on differential equations and fluid dynamics textbooks. I must admit that, at the time I was intimidated by the lack of pretty pictures and "this subject is yippy yippy yippy!" language preceding every chapter, as was common in our high school calculus textbook. However I'm extremely happy with this book. It wastes no time in pulling you straight into the material at hand. While the text does not really shine until around the calculus of one-variable vector functions, it is still a wonderful text for anyone who wants to learn Multivariable Calculus on their own, but without the diluted and often bland explanations found in other texts. One thing about this text that I welcomed in particular, was proofs; all the equations, theorems etc. are followed proofs which really force you to understand the subject, as opposed to random formulas fed to you without any idea of what is going on (which is what we were taught in the classroom).
I've also found this book to make a great reference for anyone working on subjects that require knowledge of vector calculus. As someone who has acquired an interest in the study of fluid dynamics, this book is a good quick reference for directional derivatives, line integrals etc. I only wish series were covered in this text (but this something the author addressed in the preface). I also wish this text had more exercises. But all in all, I found this to be an excellent text, and I highly recommend it.

A good book from a great teacher

Perhaps I have a bias because the author was my professor for the course, but this is a high quality calculus text. The book clearly explains the subject matter with useful examples which are accompanied by appropriate problems. BTW, I think the comment below is funny. You should ignore it...
