Invaluable information of knowledge & applications of artist's material /supplies techniques

I love the materials knowledge & applications that are given at the first half of this reference book. I, however, agree with another customer's assertion that the remaining part of the book was demo related, but I like the list of suppliers near the end towards the index section. I am happy that I now own this book as with my other in-depth reference of artist's materials & supplies information that I wished I had gotten a few years ago.

Creevy's Oil Painting Book

The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (Watson-Guptill Materials and Techniques) has a lot of good technical information covering materials and tools, oil painting techniques, and the related alkyd paints, water-miscible oils, and oil sticks. He also gives some coverage of brands; this is dated, since the book was published in 1994, but there is still useful information. The book omits detailed information about corrections to oil paintings like scraping down, tonking/blotting, wiping, and sanding. Many techniques are illustrated, however, and the writing is clear.
There are lots of quality glossy illustrations in the book. These illustrations are mostly from Creevy's hand. The paintings are pleasantly colorful, but often, when different techniques are being illustrated, the paint surface has the same kind of scumbled look. Another problem is that the paintings show a limited drawing ability. This is appearant particularly in his life studies, which are sorely awkward. I find the book useful, but consult it only for technical information and procedures, not aesthetic matters. However, materials and techniques are all that the title purports to cover.

A very good overview of the basic of oil painting.

The book is old, but it contains all you need for the basics. He goes into great detail on mediums, paints, brushes, etc. I learned a lot even though I've been painting for years.
