The Definitive Guide To Ampeg!

This is, quite simply, the ultimate guide for anyone that has any interest in Ampeg, amplifiers, or bass guitars. A briliant job of putting together a lot of information, with a lot of great pictures.
A must own for anyone even remotely interested in the topic.

A Must Read for all Ampeg Enthusiasts!

Ampeg : The Story Behind the Sound is a book that anyone who is in the music business or interested in music or recording MUST read. Gregg Hopkins and Bill Moore did an unbelievable job of tracking down and producing the last word in Ampeg bass, guitar and amplifier facts, myths and legends. This book is worth the price for the pictures alone! Having been an Ampeg user (1966 B-15N amp and 1963 horizontal fretless electric bass) since 1975, I thought I knew quite a bit about Ampeg, but this book made me feel like a novice. If you now own, have ever owned, or know someone who owns any Ampeg equipment, this is THE bible of Ampeg information; from the invention of the amplified bass peg to the difficult decision by the Hull's to sell the company, and the pictures-did I mention the PICTURES! A roomfull of upright baby basses-incredible, breathtaking! You won't be able to put it down! For collectors and working musicians alike-this book has it all! Thanks to Gregg and Bill and all the folks who contributed info, stories and pictures to this awesome tome. An amazing read!

If You Own or are 'Into' Vintage Ampegs, This Book Is a Must!

While the writing is a little obtuse at times the content is outstanding tho it's all as of 1999. Certainly this doesn't affect the historical information on the company nor it's products but some of the vacuum tube availability has certainly changed. The books is more or less chronological with extensive sections inserted in the overall story for products/technologies and product time-lines. I found the appendix especially usefull since it deals with how to decode component manufacturers and the EIA (created by military during WW-II) date encoding as well as Ampeg serial number sequencing and encoding whihc actually changed a couple times over the years. The appendix also includes usefull discussion on tubes, repair and parts/tubes, some key service bulletin references for trouble shooting some known nitty problems, and some good contact info. If you're considering this book you'll want to check out sites like fliptops.net, mojotone and antique electronic supply, among others. Though definately not a technical or troubleshooting guide to Ampeg products, If you've visited any of those sites in the vein of fixing/refurbing an Ampeg, orjust have general interest in the history, products or politics revolving around Ampeg I think you will enjoy reading this book. Lots of good insights and information into the products and the business of what was arguably one of the (if not THE) very finest makers of instrument amplifiers and the changing climate and culture over the years as well as Ampeg's stodgy and slow, then meteroic rise ...eventual near demise ...it's re-rise ...and it's status at every stage along the way ...through 1999.
